I saw some funny analysis from one Robbert Nagila of NTV about cc of these two models. That the passat consumes more,it being 1790cc while C180 consumes less,it being 1597cc...Is this true???

Yes it is.

The Merc with a smaller engine capacity and smaller in size as compared to the Passat will give you more miles per gallon.

The Merc does 40miles per gallon compare to 34 miles per gallon from the Passat which is approx 10km more.

Will send you a link shortly to do the comparisons.

Here is the link

http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-chooser-compare

Check the box on the mercedes and passat side to compare.

Passat from the comparisons is doing between 34-37 miles per gallon while the Merc is doing between 40-45 mpg

@TRS;

Now that's a funny question!

I am one the owners...have been since 1994!!

Others include;

Kingsway Nominees - 12.4%
Paul wanderi Ndungu - 11.3%
Stanbic Nominees - 6.7%
Rift Valley Finance - 4.5%
Andy Forwarders - 4.1%
Joe Kamau Kibe - 3.7%
APA Insurance - 3.2%
Mobicom (aka,Wanderi) - 2.1%
Craysell Investments - 1.5%
Hemkunvar Ramji Devraj Shah - 1.1%

This was the shareholding as at31st Dec 2008

As you can see,non of the usual suspects are on the list...indeed,the largest shareholder would be Wanderi with a combined 13.4% .

It is interesting that three of these top 10 hold their shares in their personal names (Wanderi,Kibe,& Ramji). They see no need to hide behind some ubiquitous company name.

wen it comes to engine capacity and fuel consumption, things are never as straight forwad as they seem..

1st,who said all passats are 1.8L? there are 2.0L passats too..Th c180 shud a approximately hav a 1.8L engine...i doubt the 1.5L claim..

2nd,if the c180 consumes less, its becoz its mor fuel efficient, not becoz of the lower CC.i can confirm to u that the range rover 4.4L consumes less than the 1985 benz 300sel(3L engine)...

the relationship btwn capacity n consumption is there, but its not perfectly proportional.

lastly,ad be very careful with those topgear quotations of mpg...Mostly,they test the cars under ideal conditions.

all said n done, the c-class is poor man's merc, while the passat is the rich man's VW...so it cud be tru that the latter is a fuel hog.

wikipedia says,

On its debut,the C-Class was the only Mercedes model with a complete lineup of multi-valve engines. The new family of four cylinder petrol units,called M111,debuted in the C 180 (1.8 L,122 PS (120 hp/90 kW)),C 200 (2.0 L,136 PS (134 hp/100 kW) and C 220 (2.2 L,150 PS (148 hp/110 kW),the only four cylinder of the range sold in the U.S.). In 1996 the C 220 was replaced by the C 230,enlarged to 2.3 L displacement but with the same output,although with torque increased to 220 N·m (162 lb·ft). The C 280 was the high end model of the class,with a four-valve-per-cylinder straight-6 engine,capable of reaching 193 PS (190 hp/142 kW).

so,there it is,a c-180 has 1.8L,c200 has 2.0L,c-220 has 2.2L..similarly,the s-600 v12 has a 6.0 litre engine..

cheers.

@Impunity - I started doubting the numbers when Nagila indicated something like carbon emissions of 150gms/km - thats more, gramme for gramme, than the fuel used in a km (and 150 gms is like a bar of bath soap - basically on the drive to work I'd dump 1kg of CO2? no way!)

. Let me check out that comparison site. I think if one can get more BHP with less cc,then the car is more efficient than one with less BHP and higher cc (Peugeot 504 I hear is one such car when viewed against the entry level 126 series Merc (280S/280SEL) i.e. cc vs BHP

The problem with equality is that we desire that it be with those that have more than us rather that those that have less

There is a new engine by VW called TSI.Its a 1.3l turbocharged engine with an output of over160hp With unrivalled fuel economy. They should have bought this version.
The utimate goal of investing is to buy low sell high;if we re-write this core equation in psychology terms it becomes buy fear sell greed.

@ enigma you seem to be saying the 1.6L Merc does not exist,so let me bring you up to speed - read up on BLUE technology.

Blue is the new Green technology for the auto industry where aerodynamics, fuel consumption, roll resistance, weight etc are improved without compromising the cars power/outputwith the following benefits:

Energy savings

Less CO2 emission

Savings on tax/insurance etc

Some of the manufuctureres who have adopted it are Peugeot - Blue Lion,

VW - Blue Motion for (Where the Passat @sheep describes below falls) and Mercedes - BlueEFFICIENCY where the 1.6L (1597cc) C180 falls and was first launched at the 2008 Geneva Motorshow

@enigma:Prior to the mid 90s Mercedes +BMW faithfully used the first 2 numbers (merc) or last two digits(BMW) to indicate engine capacity eg mercedes 230E was a 2300cc fuel injected engine.
nowadays sometimes the digits correspond to the cc like the new E300 but sometimes not like the C180.
BMW have been doing this since the E46 3series from 2002 the 318 has a 2000cc engine and not a 1800cc while the 320 has a 2000cc engine.
