" Analysts reckon that NIC Bank will not have an easy task in getting a new head of finance in a market reeling from a shortage of CFOs." http://www.businessdaily...2/-/cm0bxq/-/index.html

How true is this?

I thought there are many BCOMs, MBA's, CPAs and CFAs in Kenya today? There could still be shortages of this key skill?

Academic papers dont make a CFO. Academia + Experience is what makes CFOs

So you want to mean they evaporate when they go to practice? Accountancy profession has been there for ages. How comes there is a shortage?

The post of CFO isnt purely accounting based this days, times have changed the CFO has to be versatile not the kawaida boring (am sorry to say this) accountant of yester years, its a mix of accounting,a little bit of wealth management, throw in a bit of risk management,....The investment environment has changed so much...
Then as you,ve bin told experience also matters...
If you,ve read Financial management by Panday he describes how the role of CFO has evolved over time in chapter one.

Thanks @maka

Good insight. To add on that, Accounting is more popular in Kenya than Finance atleast I remember everyone wanted to be a CPA back when I was in Highschool. Although most CFOs are CPAs( a requirement in some countries), almost all of them took finance track at the beginning of their careers. Most people who take accounting track get stuck along the way alot of them end up going back for MBA just to switch to finance track.

The best path to be a CFO is to beginning your career in public accounting, get your 3-4yrs experience in the big four firms, by the end of the 4 yrs you'll have earned your CPA and experience in full income statements. Then switch to Corporate Finance by either going back for an MBA or cold search.

CFA path will likely not give someone much experience to be a CFO unless you go the Investment banking path- Most CFAs end up in wealth management track-.

Shortage of crooks? Really? Kenya? OK.

I have always thought that all CFOs in publicly listed firms are COOKS/CROOKS!

Kuwa mpole. I thought CFO's must give consistent reporting whether taking care of stakeholder interest. Thats why they must do some adjustments here and there also considering strategic development.
