I wonder why people think matatus are the cause of traffic jams. Look at Museum Hill all the way to Nyayo, most of them are personal cars, and that traffic is felt within the upper CBD. There are soooooo many personal cars and the roads ni zile tu. That's why I'm hoping the southern bypass is completed, or even the link roads.

Agree with Jus Blazin that personal cars are the problem but think more roads just get people buying [or maybe using] more personal cars. Nairobi's traffic mess will only be sorted by an efficient and reliable [not these mats that offload passengers before their destination etc] public transport system - be it light rail, tram or even KBS of old ....

First you do these small basic things.

Then you enforce a congestion tax for cars in CBD and on Uhuru Highway. Just watch how things start changing. 1000 bob a week to use Highway or go into town. Take it or leave it!

But at least make the first move...don't talk theories and bore us with statistics we all know, be a man of action!

true

we have a poor public transport system changing this will be the hardest thing ever...how many countries have their public transport system in the hands of ordinary citizens...this is a recipe of chaos...you charge me with 1000 bob congestion fee yet if I leave my car at home I will suffer the whole day plus pay an arm and a leg for very short distances...

True. I think we have to sort out the public system first.... then, to get people to use the public system, use the heavy fines. Otherwise, what options is let for people once the fine is enforced without an alternative?

Our mats decide where to pick and where to drop.... so, you could be headed to Ngong Road from Juja road and they say "mwisho" at city stadium - in the name of using pyanya routes!

Look closely. Has anyone accomplished anything yet ?

What has Uhuru accomplished so far ?
Which governor has actually accomplished anything ?
Which minister has accomplished anything so far ?
Has the new parliament even done anything of note ?

At least Kidero has put his foot down against corruption which will go a long way in making the city better.

Remember Kimunya's moratorium on registration of 14 seaters? Shelved for populist reasons. Lets now pay the price.

Shelved for a very limited period, to allow registered long distance SACCOs get a newer fleet. Only 1500 vehicles were allowed. BTW I think Kimunya achieved quite a lot even though I dislike him. The MANDATORY SACCOs are his brainchild.

I think there are as many vehicles not registered under saccos as there are registered. There are some matatu owners who swear that they would not join a sacco. Operating a matatu without being tied to a sacco pays more (overloading, no sacco fees, no fixed routes, etc).

I also think the number of new 14 seater matatus are far above the 1500 limit. Regardless of the fact that a second hand Toyota Hiace costs 2M+.

What causes jams? the 14seater matatu or the personal car that is driving one person to wherever?

If jams are to be cleared in Nrb, make it very expensive to drive..raise parking fees as per the time peek time make it over 500 to park, the county needs the revenue, then deal with the transport sector

Start by dealing with the transport sector. Ensure there is a regular means of transport in and out of town (like the trains and tramps in Europe that have scheduled timings and will move even if empty)then the rest will take care of itself. For this to happen public transport has to be the responsibility of the government.

Right now, Nairobi is well connected...there's a bus that goes any/everywhere
