Members of County Assembly in Elgeyo Marakwet have allocated themselves Sh80 million for their car loans and setting up of a revolving fund.
The leaders approved a
Sh3.5 billion budget in which they slashed almost by half Sh100 million allocated for women and youth for the creation of a Sh40 million fund for the elderly.
Chairman of the budget committee Vincent Keittany tabled the estimates at the county assembly and said
Sh60 million of the total budget will be allocated to members of the assembly for car loans.Another
Sh20 million has been allocated to members for a revolving fund at an interest rate of 3 per cent. Keittany said Sh10 million had earlier been allocated to the fund but the figure was doubled to cater for the 30 assembly members.
Sh1.8 billion, or 47 per cent of the total budget, will cater for recurrent expenditure while Sh1.6 billion will go to agriculture and infrastructure development.
The county which has Alex Tolgos as the governor will receive Sh2.9 billion from the national treasury and Sh116.3 million collected from rates. Sh85 million will be collected through licensing and other revenue sources.
Keittany said the education sector will receive Sh181 million, health services Sh50 million, Sh130 million for welfare, while the renovation of county offices and county assembly will cost Sh66 million and Sh54 million respectively.
The budget committee has also set aside Sh50 million for a governor fund to cater for emergencies. "Such money can be used for repair of roads and other issues which emerge in the process," said Keittany.
Sh50 million will be used for tourism promotion and Sh28 million on livestock production, while Sh3.3 million has been allocated to veterinary services. The county has allocated Sh15 million for land acquisition to develop a sewerage system.
