The Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago recently unveiled a Sh5.2 billion budget for the 2013/2014 financial year with the lion’s share of the projected figures being directed at improvement of infrastructure. He allocated Sh500 million towards Healthcare. The plan is to to equip health centres and dispensaries with drugs and medical personnel to decongest Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
See sh500 million is enough to equip a large hospital!
I know about the strategy to decongest Moi Teaching, it is a good strategy on paper. The biggest problem in healthcare provision in Kenya right now is, providers/DR/Nurse, have no incentive to go to work because they are underpaid and have to hustle to make a living, bed days are significantly high because most of the time doctors are not available to discharge or even treat the sick. There is a fundamental problem in a country when you pay a doctor Kshs 100,000 when you pay an MP, PS etc Kshs 1,000,000+
