@ Chaka. Yes Coke contains a LOT of sugar.
However, Del Monte and to most extant Pick & Peel don't have sugar. And neither adds other junk into their juices.
Coke, on the hand is VERY UNHEALTHY.

Coke, on the hand is VERY UNHEALTHY. All juices contain sugar either sucrose or fructose which are still unhealthy....The some bottled juices have additives which are as harmful as a coke. Coke, on the hand is VERY UNHEALTHY. Just to clarify, there is a difference between 'fruit juice' and 'fruit nectar'. Fruit juices are like Afia and Pick and peel. They contain between 10-15% real fruit juice, then are topped up with water and sugar and whatever else. Fruit nectars contain 100% fruit juice, with no added sugar or preservatives - these are always indicated on the box. Still contains natural sugars like fructose though.

Boss unaongea the opposite, Nectars contain 25-50% (it has added sucrose and other materials), above that we have the fruit juices which can only have fructose added in case of fruits that require further sweetening!!!! For Kevian: Peek N' Peel is fruit juice: Afya is a nectar!!! ..."Wewe ni mtu mdogo sana....na mwenye amekuandika pia ni mtu mdogo sana!".

I happened to work in one of the Juice companies that packs their products in tetra packs just like Delmonte and Pick and Peel. For those who are very very sensitive about your health, Just drink water and when you have time, make your fruit juice at home.
The process was just to import fruit concentrate from Netherlands, buy white sugar, print the tetra packs from Tetrapak and take all this to KWAL. KWAL would do the mixing and of fruit concentrate, water and sugar and pack. Then they would charge for that work. You will be surprised that the single highest cost for a litre of juice before government taxes is the packaging. The fruit concentrate is so little that it does not make much sense to say that you are getting any benefit. You may think that they high cost may mean you are taking fruit juice but the cost from the factory is still very low...then the government charges excise duty and vat. Factor the profit of the producer and even a bigger profit for the supermarket and you have your cost. If you have an average taster, you would not need any one to tell you that afia has nothing to do with pure fruit juice, water and sugar.....their is something else added. Read the label and you will notice they have citric acid as a preservative. Afia may be better than Coke but definitely not for the health conscious.

White sugar can only be added to the Nectars but not fruit juice. Sucrose can easily be detected and KEBS will be in your case if you were to add white sugar and sell it as fruit juice. So the company you were working for was definitely making nectars and selling in tetra paks!!!! ..."Wewe ni mtu mdogo sana....na mwenye amekuandika pia ni mtu mdogo sana!".

I used to work for a guy who would evade all taxes and wherever I would tell him it would be bad if KRA guys visited the premises, He would assure me that he would only be worried if they sent a machine not a human being.

This is the truest account of all about "fruit juices" in Kenya. They are 75% chemicals and water. You are much better off buying real fruits from the market and eating them or juicing them than consuming Afia, Pick & Peel, Delmonte, Minute Maid etc. e.g. Apple Juices? They grow apples in Kenya? They import real apples and turn them into juices? NO! They import apple chemical powders and mix them with water to form juices. Set out to correct the world's wrongs and you will most certainly wind up adding to them.

Pessimsm among kenyans, real fruit juices are obviously better, to call Delmonte and peek n' peel juices 75% chemicals is a big disservice to what some of these people try to do to let you get as close to a real fruit as possible. I rest my case!!!!! ..."Wewe ni mtu mdogo sana....na mwenye amekuandika pia ni mtu mdogo sana!".

I rest my case!!!!! I agree with McReggae about the chemical issue. Those juices in Tetrapaks have no chemicals. Most of them are made of fruit concentrates (you can google that. The only problem is the sugar part. Someone has mentioned about industrial sugar....may be this is what I called white sugar. But someone told me that Delmonte use fruit syrup as a sweetener...not sure if this is true. If you are careful, you will realize that delmonte has two types of juices, what they call fruit juice and what they call juice blend. The fruit juice is in dark green packets and and is only available I guess in Pineapple and Orange. The other has green and white colour on the packet. I guess the one that is more of juice is the first one. But in summary, they are not chemicals but are not the best options for the health conscious. For the health conscious, buy fruits in the market. A question. How much do you think a litre of apple juice would cost considering the price of one apple?

My beverage of choice is a warm Guiness for many reasons that most of you have already mentioned. In a nutshell I believe that it has more health benefits than coke, delmonte, afia and all the others combined. I rest my case!

Like Coke, the mantra of making Afia juices at available at every street corner is also one of the reasons that has made this low cost juice popular. Which reminds me of the tragic tale of Picana, which has just refused to penetrate the market over the yrs, despite using real fruit pulp. A sleeping giant over the years.
Haiya, whatever happened to Alvaro - a marketing blitzkrieg, success and then...loud silence. Ama it achieved its aim of proving it was a successful brand (Kenya was used as a testing ground)...or the hype just died after Mahinda left?

I know someone who worked in Softa when it was starting to become a hit and Coca-Cola Kenya pulled a first one on them (buying sodas, pouring and breaking bottles).
I believe they've changed their marketing strategies since Afia really seems to be doing well.
I personally would buy Afia anytime over Coke.
