As a last resort, Egypt will certainly go to war to defend its rights to maintain its current usage of the nile river, because in reality, take away the nile and Egypt and its 80 million odd people will dry up in the Sahara. However, they prefer to be more engaging, thats why they are members of blocs like COMESA etc, and I bet they are responsible for Sudan's application to join EAC.

If this war should come to pass, it will require their Army to conquer a very large area. They certainly don't have the capacity to do that, but my bet is they will try anyway.

And where does Kenya as a regional power house say? Don't we import electricity from Ethiopia? Maybe we should take advantage of the Arab uprising to support Ethiopia in its endeavors; and broker a deal for cheaper electricity.

I would rather stand by and watch. This should be a tricky one for the US, Ethiopia vs Egypt, two of their staunchest allies in Africa, I wonder how they would play this.

Those were very poor contributions which goes to say Mpigs anywhere are but the same.Only N.Sudan supports Egypt in this jinga believe that they own the water. All other riparian countries are against....and for heaven's sake,i do not see Egypt ever striking Ethiopia or any other country south of it.......We all know why!

Tell us please?
Coz I know Egypt is more battle hardened than all Nile riparian states combined, this country has been in war since the beginning of history...at one time it even defeated the mighty Israel.

Have you ever visited the Luxor area of Egypt? You will see fighter jets and tanks hidden under bunkers in the form of sand dunes.

Best solution is riparian countries should encourage private small and large scale land owners to irrigate using the Nile water. Also local governments should be encouraged to provide cheap Nile water to their people. I'm sure Egypt would be overwhelmed , sit down and renegotiate colonial era treaties.

I have been to the Luxor and Aswan areas of Egypt and these guys are doing amazing things. I lived in Alexandria for a while and I used to buy nyanyas and kitungus at cheaper prices than i could ever buy in Kenya. I must say very embarrassing. These guys take full advantage of the water thus I can understand their panic.

I hope that leaders in these countries will opt to dialogue and find ways in supporting continuity of the Nile instead of bringing problems to the people. Sababu vita ikianza ni sisi ndio tutaumia.

Tough times. The problem with Ethiopia's move is that it emboldens East African countries to follow suit and this could be trouble for the Egyptian economy

Tz are using Nile waters for irrigation pia.
And what those egyptians are saying is very much teh official policy..in fact, the egyptian leadership may reason that war would be good for the country as it would serve to unite the fragmented State - wars evoke and fan nationalistic feelings and the populace would forget domestic troubles and support the fight against the 'enemy'...

But know ye all that Ethiopia and Kenya have a mutual defense pact - anyone attacks Ethiopia, and we are obliged to declare war on them as well! As we are still building an cross- border (much less cross-regional) aggressive posture, in such a scenario we would merely be left to defend ourselves n maybe, protect Ethiopians.

The problem with Bashir being an ally of pharaoh is that their territory can be used to launch sorties/ special missions against key Ripraian states like Kenya,Ethiopia & Uganda (partly the reason why M7 got those Sukhoi jets?) - I mean pharaoh doesn't have to hit all the states just a few prominent ones ili iwe funzo kwa wengine...
That said its unlikely the paharaohs can sustain a military campaign against 8 states for a long time. It would split the world - Arabs supporting Egypt and Xtians the rest?
War's unlikely for now. The 1956 treaty has to be re-negotiated.

Ethiopians online said if a resolution is passed for them not to use the waters then they'd rather poison it. When the Egyptian President threatened to go to war over the dam, the Ethiopian PM asked them to go ahead and then went ahead to build the dam. Channeling of the water started on the 28th of May, if they haven't done anything, they will do nothing.
