You can change do a different size tire.... kind of. First thing is to make sure you have clearance for a different size tire. Second you've got to consider that changing the tire size, specifically the circumference of the tire, is going to alter your speedometer readings a bit.
Using the two tire sizes you've given for an example;
the 195/55 is 73.7" in circumference. It will turn over 860 times per mile.
the 195/60 is 76.1" in circumference and will be 833 revolutions per mile.
That will end up being 3.3% too slow. When the speedometer shows 60 mph on the 195/60's, you will actually be going 62 mph.The circumference is the main thing to keep your speedometer correct. If you are wanting to run a wider tire and 195/55/15 is the recommended size, a 215/50/15 is the exact same circumference. It is a wider tire (by 20 millimeters), but same distance around the tread (73.7'').
