Hi good people

Of late,several buildings have some hollow blocks evenly arranged before the slab is laid. I understand that they reduce the cost of laying a slab by almost half. Can anyone please shed some light on this?

Yes. Works two ways:-
1. cost of the hollow blokcs,lower than than of similar sized concrete
2. hollow blocks are lighter hence using less reinforcement

However they are more efficient on longer spans over 4 meters so don't clutter the construction of a dog kennel with hollow blocks.

Thanks fantony

The span will be around 12 metres. Will gather more info on this. I understand that they are made by clayworks. However,i am made to understand that they have to make the beams too.

Hollow blocks are best used where large spans r required.its not entirely true to say they r half price.where we have grids of say 5m x 5m,it would be cheaper to do 150th solid slabs. The holow slab though varies in design will have ribs-75-150 mm wide spaces btw every 2-4 blocks .and in some interval mostly on grids beams are done. The blocks hav 1 disadvantage.after some years n wear,the blocks become peameable,allowin water to sip throu-case example,jericho hses

@nyangao

Thanks for the insight

@mosby

Just thinking of your project. I am not sure about what you need,but,how about a master plan for our city roads? You could choose a section to design. I can't guarantee that the Government will implement though. ha ha ha

what problem did you want to solve with your education from the outset?

- respectable credentials
- aviod / get out of poverty
- help the society
- satisfy your curiosity

depending on the above you might just identify the area of 'study'.

Essentially,you might be in that class for all of the wrong or right reasons. sit down and ponder about your preferred future. And what you want to spend your time doing with it.

it doesn't make sense to study roads when your entire constituency has only one river that dries up even in wet weather.

or study water; while you think showering is not essential.

or study roads yet you dont like the sun and/or wet weather.

or materials while you know all the best labs are on another continent and whatever your findings will be were in std 8 chemistry report in japan.

or management while all you wish in your life is to be left alone.

hollow blocks are meant for sound proof,and are preferably worthwhile in a residential house,but not good for flats due to the weak points incase of lightining the whole block can tumble down just google and u will get all the info.

Always looking forward to excel

Mmmh,didnt know we had structural Engineers as members of SK
@Tito,what do you mean that the beams too have to be made by Clayworks,thats CRAP,the beams are cast insitu,all you need to know are the hollow block dimensions and loading regime i.e what kind of load are you going to subject the suspended slab to.
If you geeky enough,try going through BS 8110:1 1997 clause 3.6. Good luck.

I called clayworks and that's exactly what they told me. I understand how the beams are made. However,they said that they will require structural drawings. Then,they can come up with the blocks and have to make the beams too.

There are different technologies to construction. i believe what tito meant was using 'precast caly hollow block cast on the ground and erected.To elaborate further,
You arrange 1row of the clay hollow blocks on the ground . The blocks have a groove at the top where you place a steel bar running through. you then place meshwire above the blocks and lay about 50-75mm thick concrete overlay on top. what you get is a 'precast beam,which you can place on top of a beam. The beams are place abutting each other and when the slab is all covered you can lay 50 mm thick concrete. this is deemed a cheap technology and faster method of construction.

@mosby; you are missing one important point: one of the most important objectives of final year B.Sc project is to help build the student's creativity....in coming up with a project. Now if wel tell you the project to undertake,we shall have effectively helped you cheat in your exams!

Come on; you are young and energetic; you are the kind of people that Kenyans have put the hopes for the future on....to come up with creative solutions to our problems; Get your creative juices to work and come-up with your own project!!
