Now now now, based on Safaricom's reaction to a well known rabble rouser who's much better ignored, it seems there's some truth to these allegations: 1. A group of 20 former and current Safaricom customer care agents, some “retired” because they could not use headsets anymore, are now taking legal action against Safaricom. 2. Safaricom chose to retire them due to the illness caused by working at Safaricom and they were given a very unfair retirement package of 2 months salary for every year worked and no medical cover. http://www.techmtaa.com/2013/04...aired-by-cheap-headsets/3. They were signing contracts every six months which is performance based. Safaricom has sued controversial Nairobi blogger Robert Alai for libel and now wants a court to order him to pull down two “offensive” articles he is alleged to have posted on a website. The contested articles which the company wants removed, according to the claim, appear on a website www.tecmtaa.com and are titled ‘Safaricom Now Retiring and Muzzling Call Centre Staff Impaired by Cheap Handsets’ and ‘Another Chilling Letter From a Safaricom Call Centre Staff’. This is just corporate irresponsibility. So little needs to be done to take care of the clearly hapless staff and they resort to legal

No @Muheani, though Safaricom response does not prove they did anything illegal... the recordings, emails, physiological syndrome are all fact. So Safaricom who are often keen to tout 'sustainable, responsible, caring' behaviour: O- treated more than 20 under their care unfairly, who've been left with no recourse other than Alai O- who's now under the gun from Safaricom legal keen to cover tracks In fact, I'd warrant the outcome would be a little different if the victims were unionised, which is their constitutional right. Isn't it better to direct welfare at conditions where you're a causative agent first - 'bring back our hearing home' Let's face it, no one let alone a Corporate is perfect. Even Google's don't be evil came under strain. So no need to preach too much on behalf of employer with capitalist motives...

For the record am not an Employee or lawyer for SAFCOM But in The Telecoms Sector. I Have Followed This ENT issues From 2010...it Ai'nt Knew How Unfairly were They treated? N Which Company Is Not Capitalist...exists To Make Money For Welfare? 1. Non Of Them Wasnt kept On the Companys paroll For over a Yr B4 Lay Off Last Yr ....while they Were Home....recovering...how Many Companies Do That? 2..while they Were Home...they enjoyed Full salaries And Medical Cover For Themselves And Their Families.. 3. The Recordings Were not secret...each Of The 20 Was Given a Hearing That Was Recorded And They Were Given A Copy Of The Same..the very Bitter Ones Turned To @allai With That "EVIDENCE" 4. One of Them..while Waiting to Get Well and At Home Went Ahead To Take A Loan With stanchart, Guaranteed By The Safcom Payslip And Recommended By The Safcom Hr...started A Hardware At Kitengela... U Sould Listen To His recording...very Grateful To Safcom ?...they All Had A similar Opportunity...but The Most Of Them Just Sat Home..waiting To Be Paid For No Work Forever...ngrrrrrr. 5. If a Headset Worth Btn 15-25k Is Cheap...like Those In Use At Their CC....then I Want To Know How Expensive A Headset Call Centres Should Use 6. The guys got sick because of the work they were doing for Safaricom. It does not matter whether they are using head sets worth 15-20k or whether they were paying them while not working. What matters is the work Safaricom contracted them to do made them sick. But again because this is Kenya they will get away with it. They should thank their lucky stars. Agreed @bkismat. In the UK, home of Vodafone, there's a well developed industrial deafness legal and compensation framework. Unapewa kazi halafu unaanza kusema kazi inakuumiza. Sasa ulikuwa unafikiri utabembelezwa lakini unaambiwa hatutaki kukuumiza kwa hivyo tuachane tu roho safi.
I think this guy as a kid used to eat what he wants, he is given food and he says sitaki hii, sitaki hii, toa hii etc and his mama just did as he wished. Asiyefunzwa na mamaye hufunzwa na ulimwengu.
Mothers please don't do this to your children. Kama umepika chakula and serve the child. The child should have the free will to either eat happily or starve. They quickly learn that they eat for their own benefit and are not doing anybody any favour. In future they also learn to stop whining and take their jobs seriously.

After listening to the first few minutes, it seems SafCom went to extreme lengths to not only appear to be fair but to actually be fair, even transferring him to a different section/dep't for 2months which was extended by a further one month. At least he was dismissed with all his dues, including pension, and they even retained his medical for a further 3months. Anyway, corporate behemoths exist to make money. @Kusadikika, your post reminds me of a pal whose young kids never wanted to have sweet potatoes and arrowroots, instead preferring bread. One day, utterly frustrated, she refused to buy the bread and told the mboch not to hook any other meal. So kids went out to play, when they came back at 10, there was only the ngwací & ndúma that they'd rejected. They went back out to play reasoning that lunch wasn't too far off. Shock on them when they came back at lunch time and there was only the same delicacy. By 3 o'clock when the hunger pangs could no longer be ignored, wakaamua kama mbaya ni mbaya, they devoured the tubers thoroughly. That was the last time she ever bought bread. Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on.

Airtel opted an out of court settlement, and this one, will be one show down esp now that they have opted to serve him "expensively". I wonder how much they paid for that.
