I,m one Kenyan who can state without fear of contradiction that 'I am proud to be Kenyan.'My heart swells with pride in the knowledge that I am one among many beautiful people,who have been blessed to reside in this part of the globe with all its rich heritage.
Having stated the above,I think part of progressive thinking lies in the ability to subject oneself to periodic self-introspection. The Catholics call it an examination of conscience. We(Kenyans) have this uncanny obnoxious trait of playing victims( myself included ).This manifests in our sub-culture of whining,fault-finding and complacency.We epitomize the adage Damsel in Distress (P.G Wodehouse)in most of our circumstances.Why? Fellow brothers why do we retreat to this helpless estate?If its not the politician,mungiki,police,the constitution,the census,the thief,traffic jam,the landlord,its the wife,the hubby,the girl next door or even Obama and his wife and kids.Is it really that bad people that we've actually run out of options?

Come on people we can change.We can take charge of our own destiny.We can take on any and every challenge life throws our way without taking cover in the safety of such ignoble traits.We can lead our leaders,lift ourselves from the shackles of mediocrity and haplessness to take our rightful place in the globe- which is at the top. A great people are not defined the abundance of their material content but the content of their attitude towards themselves and others. A quality that we possess in good measure but one that has been clouded by the negativity in our lives. Lets soar like eagles fellow Kenyans,na kwa kweli tutaendelea kujivunia kuwa Wakenya.

After the tribal wars,we are soon going for class wars,the poor against the rich. Seriously,this gap between the rich and the poor is just mind-boggling. I understand that Kenya is the 3rd most unequal nation on the planet after Brazil and some other country I forgot. That's why you see middle class Kenyans indulging in opulent luxury when you switch on The Wedding Show while our comrades are starving to death in Nothern parts of Kenya while others enjoy roasted rats in parts of Baringo.

Something needs to be done urgently about this ever widening gap. While the poor battle it out with the police over our democratic space in sprawling slums of kibera and Kawangware,the middle and upper class snobs are cruising in top range autos to their favourite nyama choma joints. When the said gap is lessened,then we can truly show that elusive pride in our nation instead of the denial exhibited by the well off. Otherwise,prepare for an Armageddon come 2012 between tribes and classes. And Kenya will cease to exist as you know it!

As for now,najihurumia kuwa Mkenya.

@Ericks,

Firstly,this has nothing to do with 'others' has everything to do with 'you'.To make reference to other issues is to miss the boat by the river. This is the attitude that we seek to extirpate-shirking personal responsibility. Has nothing to do with national issues either. But lets even turn to the issue you so laboriously wish to bring to the fore..poverty.So what are you doing about it-yourself?.

Good thinking like Mr. Tea's is what we call progress. The attitude of kujihurumia etc is shortsighted and only benefits the politicians who thrive on making you feel bad,small and in need of rescue by them.
