Was reading that story about al-shabaab amputating the 4 mu-guys,what Im not getting is...,is it the left feet they chopped off or the leg?

and since this is the second related story of amputating arms etc,(there was an email about an islam boy who was found stealing bread and his arm had to be run over by a car us punishment) and all of these guys are talking of they followed ..uhmm was it shaaria ama what was it? is this punishment acceptable in Islam?
