I have always wondered why it matters so much to political parties to have the speaker elected from their parties yet once the Speaker is elected he/she becomes neutral in the execution of duties. If I may ask for example, how did ODM benefit as a party for the 5 years Marende was speaker? Enlighten me.

Talk of fear of the unknown by political parties.

Casual quip, but foes and friends alike agree Kenneth Marende was easily the most competent arbiter in a very divided House.

Otherwise, take you pick:
Moses Kiprono arap Keino 1988–1991
Jonathan Kimetet arap Ngeno 1991–1993
Francis ole Kaparo 1993–2008

Marende is still the best speaker in my opinion so far. And the reason why a party would want the speaker to come from within is for those few borderline favours. So it was right and ok for Marende to favour ODM as he was ODM and got the majority vote from the party. There's nothing sinister or unlawful there.

BBI will solve it

Insightful @2012 and convincing.
In the interests of learning, maybe you jog my memory on 2 or 3 such decisions where Marende rightly paid homage to his ODM party?

I think in his ruling on who is leader of Gova business that pitted the now CORDED losers, he sided with OAR.

Marende did a 'solomonic' thing. He refused to give it to either of them.
