@ Wendz.

i wouldnt like to trivialize it,but honestly thats exactly how i feel about it,until we learn to take things seriously, details like the ones this census will provide will be as good as the title deeds that the govt said the other day that are just mere pieces of paper... nothing would help the govt in planning better than the birth records, death records and immigration details....

@ Ericks

From you insistence on death and birth records to justify a census, one wonders whether to be irritated or sympathetic.

Theres plenty of data that death and birth certificates dont offer, such as your economic well being, proximity to utilities, proximity to health centers etc......

Like Wendz says dont trivialise an important economic event.

@ Lyanne,

sympathy would be better if directed towards those who need it,as for irritation,u can choose to get on with it.... am sure u dont actually believe that resources u mentioned hereunder will be provided based on the census, how about those who live in Mombasa n tonight n the whole of this week they'll be in nairobi? then how r u gona tell my economic wellbeing from a census? people r very conservative with their wealth details.
equitable distribution of resources can even be done using voting cards for geographical location purposes,n contrary to ur claim most birth n death details capture those proximities u mentioned. a good number of women in this country give birth at the nearest hospital or health centre. so u can actually tell if more of such resources will be needed there.
otherwise we shall continue having wealthy urban dwellers n poor rural dwellers just because we think that people in urban areas need more resources coz they r many.

Anyway thats my opinion whoever thinks that am trivializing this important exercise most probably agrees with me.

They shld learn how to manage wat they currently mismanaging! The 7B wld be beta used as face wipes! We are a doomed lot. But al said nd done. Im participating!

folks

..what Lyanne et al are saying is that there is more to Census than the mere headcount as you will soon find out once results are published.

..and there is a whole lot of interest groups/individuals for many reasons especially in reasearch work.

...there is this tendency to trivialise every govt initiative....that just doesnt help this nation.

@Shak

In a number of countries, the census is conducted through forms that are sent to each household by post. You fill the form and send it back by post or it is collected by a government's agent. This obviously requires everyone to have post office addresses etc. It also presumes a high level of literacy. Soon some countries will be able to do it thro the internet. We are still a long way from there so ours will have to be done door to door by enumerators for a long time to come.

One example - the UK -

http://www.ons.gov.uk/ce...lect-process/index.html

'The last census was carried out in 2001. A census form was delivered to every household, establishment,or to people living anywhere else,by a field force set up throughout the country.

The forms were designed for self-completion by form-fillers and to provide information relating to census day - 29 April 2001. Most forms were then posted back to temporary local offices and the remainder collected by the field force.

Everyone in the country was under an obligation to complete a census form, and a limited number of people were prosecuted for failing to comply with this obligation. A major publicity campaign helped raise awareness of the census and its importance. There was also a special programme to help various groups who might have difficulty with the census.'
