There is this Kenyan craze with masters degrees which I have observed in the last 3 years. In the last 2 years there are many kenyans going after PHDs.One thing i noticed is immediately one completes this program, they are so demoralized at work place given that the new qualification does not translate into recognition/promotion.If one has kes.500k-1M today, would you advise pursuit of these degrees or other forms of investment?

It depends what sector you are in but for me I'd rather invest the money in my business pursuits.

I once went to THE in the evening and walked into an MBA class. There were about 500 students in the class with the lecturer using a microphone.I never enrolled in the institution.

Saw an ad for Principal Secretaries by the PSC(replacement for current PSs). A masters degree was a must! I hate to do a masters for the sake of it but...

True. There are too many MBAs ...I think a thousand or so graduate every year with all these new universities and all. There cant be enough senior or strategic management positions to accomodate all these graduates. Then in my field, which is highly technical, the hirers have learned to zero in on capability. High aptitude and ability to deliver are highly valued, this leaves many MBAs holders by the roadside as they get knocked off by a few tough questions. I have many pals who have them and they are not any further on the career path than I am.
I think generalizing, especially after studying a focused bachelor's is a mistake. It bestows dilute skills because it is spread too wide therefore too thin. You end up not doing or knowing anything well. Looking to the future, this is an economy that will start looking for people with very high skills in certain narrow expertise. Skate to where the puck will be, an ice hockey player, once said. Steve Jobs liked to repeat that quote. Do an MSc, M.Eng, MA Econ, something specialised and deep.

The problem is the same that is facing fresh graduates most people will go back to school to pursue masters to get a promotion at work. There are so many universities coming in to the market and for most of them the basic requirement is a PHD .This is an opportunity some of the graduates can exploit since not all can be absorbed .

Well it ain't a must but it goes a long way. You have to realise employers here really enjoy because where else would you find a doctor/lawyer/engineer who had also done say CPA? Kenya is highly competitive, although the quality of graduates is usually in disrepute....

My advice do one but look for the top schools as you will get headhunted from there and better yet you will get a good network. Ukienda anything else, just do it for the sake of the knowledge then.
