So UK announced today that the port will not be privatised.

While I agree with him, I feel that port needs drastic improvement to keep up with the needs of Kenyan businesses.

The inefficiency and corruption there is sickening.

The Port is a key asset to the Govt, people of Msa ( through employment/ service industry) and wheeler dealers. Alot of business both legal and illegal goes on there, at some point the new container terminal currently under construction may be privatized.Just keep watching ,they are politicians....

It should be privatised. See where we are with safcom and KQ. If anyone wants to be assured of his job/jobs, they should be prepared to provide good service to those who pay their salaries. Coast people should start understanding this. More jobs and expansion of Mombasa is likely to happen if you have a port management that is more modern, responsive and business minded.

I think some sort of quasi-privatisation is urgently required. Look what happened to RVR. I hope that's not how the port ends up.

Gvt and politics can never deliver efficiently, the lazy coast people want the port as a political tool, the bitter truth is that any straight thinking president would fight for privatisation to the right investors but not kenyan proxy investors with bad motives, the locals can be shareholders

Studies have clearly shown that port productivity is higher in concessioned ports compared to non-concessioned ports.

Privatisation is the way forward.

Yes KQ. Donot look at KQ in respect to recent staff lay offs but compared to when it was run by govtment and how it transformed in private hands.

Example. It is far much more valued due to its growth in private hands. It has much more employees. More young pilots. Doing more routes. It has contributed more to make JKIA as hub, made more profits than loses. It has contributed to the exchequer more than milking it. etc etc

Sometimes you just need to cut an paste. Singapore's port is a hub port where ships from all over the world go there to offload there cargo to other ships. Its a shipping hub and its in private hands. Business there is booming.

But the coastals...I think they are justified in wanting one of their own to head KPA.

It is the case with KCC. The bosses there have been from milk producing regions

Privatization, what is it supposed to achieve? Its a strategic asset.Privatization might also bring corruption scandals and issues of wealth being shifted to certain tribal groups even if thats not the case. But let's be honest the inefficiency and corruption at the ports has made some individuals very rich and powerful and no matter what happens they will still attempt to maintain that position!
