Asteroid: A relatively small, inactive body, composed of rock, carbon or metal, which is orbiting the Sun.

Comet: A relatively small, sometimes active object, which is composed of dirt and ices. Comets are characterised by dust and gas tails when in proximity to the Sun. Far from the Sun it is difficult to distinguish an asteroid from a comet.

Meteoroid: A small particle from an asteroid or comet orbiting he Sun.

Meteor: A meteoroid that is observed as it burns up in the Earth's atmosphere - a shooting star.

Meteorite: A meteoroid that survives its passage through the Earth's atmosphere and impacts the Earth's surface.

The dinosaurs never saw their end coming, it was one of these meteorites that caused their demise. Are we headed the same direction?

Can asteroid the size of a swimming pool impact the Earth in that size without first disintegrating into miniature meteorites?

Yes it can, the one that did a fly by our planet (approx 17000 miles) a few hours ago has a length half the size of a football field. If it had hit the surface it could have had an impact the same a 2 million dynamites. This is enough to convert all buildings in Nairobi CBD to fine ashes and kill all living organisms around 100 mile radius. You should thak God al shabab prayers were not answered.[-o<
