Why should it be privatized?

Or

Why should it NOT be privatized?

Only non-core state assets should be privatised - things like sugar companies, hotels, KWAL, NBK, EA Portland, etc.

You don't want to land in a situation where the country is at the whim of parties that own essential infrastructure.

MaDVD was right that privatisation could be a source of funds - but considering there is still corruption, mega-privatisations should be OFF the table.

It should be privatised. Short-term pain for long-term gain.

however much coast people complain that port need to be privatized it has simply been gradually run down its just stuck in the 80's because the government is not investing enough on it. A private entity can revamp it and bring kilindini's glory back. We have ports in this world which are computerized and efficient we are stuck on outdated tower cranes which tumble once in a while and whose still winch ropes occasionally snap.

Privatisation of the port is not a simple question of economics. Factors to consider include;
1) National security- What if the port was sold to investors friendly to Kenya who in turn sell it to elements who are sympathetic to terrorists, drug lords, etc.
2) Economics - The port has to operate efficiently in order to grow and effectively silence the ports of DAR and Djibouti.

3) Local community - The local community has to be consulted as much as the central government is making decisions. The days of lording it over communities are long gone. Suppose the port is privatized and ends up in the hands of people who prefer that the Coast secedes? what happens to the rest of the country.

Privatization is very short term way of raising money.

If an investor can see the benefit of buying and running KAA profitably in the long run, then why can't the government restructure the same KAA and run it profitably ?

Have you ever seen a parastatal that is run efficiently and profitably?

Privatisation is important, let it be a joint venture but allow the private partner management control, and the right to hire/fire.

But alas, this is Kenya, it will never happen!

KPA, KAA on private hands! There are many dynamics that have to be looked at keenly and for the sole reason of National Security & Public revenue collection, its a BIG NO!
