Playstation "chipping"

So I go and buy a used PS2 for 5k and think I have a good deal..... until I buy one of those 100-bob games and the machine doesn't recognise the disc!

I return the discs to the vendor and he immediately asks me whether my PS has been "chipped".

I don't know what he is talking about; so he explains that for the machine to read the cheap discs, its lens circuit needs to be changed... he quotes a price of sh2,000.

My question to dear wazuans is: where can I get this "chipping" done at a better price?

Welcome to the club!! There are shops on Bazaar Street that do it, or you can try the ones at Diamond Plaza. That is the cost, its a good deal.

Only problem is that a chipped PS can't play online games (a rarity in Kenya given bandwidth costs and speeds)

Found a place on Luthuli avenue that did the chipping for 1,000bob!

Yes; I confirmed that it will still read original discs.

Now let some one else tell us about another place that will do it for 500bob!!!!

@robinhood, hold out for one or two weeks, the PS4 is soon to be released. You might then be able to get a PS3 at a decent price.

I don't believe there will be a PS4 anytime soon.
I got a PS3 slim, one of those version that can't be chipped, and I was so pissed to discover this! Coz now I have to spend 7k or more on original games, on the bright side, I have quite the collection smile

The announcement by Sony is due on 25th Feb however i suspect they might release PS4 in november, just in time for the holidays...
