I tried to Google and I got the following list of the tribes of Kenya Luo, Kalenjin, Elgeyo, Kipsigis, Marakwet, Nandi, Pokot, Sabaot, Terik, Tugen, Kamba, Kikuyu, Kisii, Kuria, Maasai, Sengwer, Meru, Miji Kenda,Embu, Luhya, Bukusu, Marama, Tachoni, Maragoli, Isukha, Chonyi, Digo, Duruma, Giriama, Jibana, Kamba, Kauma, Ribe, Rabai, Orma, Pokomo, Samburu, Somali, Swahili, Taita, Taveta, Turkana, Rendile, Okiek and Oromo.
Is this the official list? I also saw another which has over 100 tribes. Which is the official list of recognised tribes in Kenya?

This is just one of many other 'facts' Kenyans are fond of throwing around. Something along the lines of - Kibera is home to 1 million residents. - 75% of Nairobi residents live in the slums - Nairobi accounts for 65% of Kenya's GDP - The Kenyan Diaspora is home to 3 million potential voters etc etc etc. We are good at repeating just about anything we hear from anybody. All my friends are heathens, take it slow. Wait for them to ask you who you know. Please don't make any sudden moves.

The count is 18. I have been told there are 42 tribes. I have heard of 41 against 1, 2 against 40 etc.

We are good at repeating just about anything we hear from anybody. @innairobi you are on point. We are lazy people. We never verify anything. Especially if it is the white man saying it, you just believe. If he says dressing naked is cool for women, next thing you see on the streets are ladies dressed like that. When they change definition of terrorism, you just follow suit without asking questions... When they say you are an ape, you start believing in it and start worshipping him. Clearly, that categorization above was not done by a Kenyan. How can you say Luhya is a tribe? Or Mijikenda? Or Kalenjin?

I think the fallacy of 42 tribes comes from 47 counties [which, you will recall, were just the last legally created districts of the previous constitutional order] minus the metropolises Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

I have always argued this issue of 42 tribes has always being propaganda. Case 1. 42 against 1:fact of the matter is gema is branded as one tribe Kikuyu. There were five tribes who voted more than 90% for Kibaki; Mbeere, Tharaka, Embu, Meru and Kikuyu. CASE 2. Ooh 2 tribes coalition while we are coalition for all tribes. Fact: the kalenjin is a conglomeration of about ten tribes and gema about five, it would be fairer to talk about fifteen which if fact is not the case. It has been propaganda, can we have the facts:the full list. Democracy does not belong to the dead
