@kimanderu

I bet you SK is full of descendants of those homeguards and that's why most of them do not want to face the issues that Kiai and Muite so eloquently address in that opinion piece.

its really sad that many are mourning their loved ones. Thats a failure in society.In a civilized,progressive society the president,PM,entire cabinet could have quit for collective failure to protect lives and property.But in Kenya/Africa......non issue. wait 2012 and witness the killings.Again if you can.. run away.

First they came for the communists,and I did not speak out
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists,and I did not speak out
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists,and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews,and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

i wish everyone could re-read Stokyt's post below....it is not as eloquent,or as long as nanfor's or maina kiai's.....but it summarizes the problem and offers the beginning of a solution. a solution to a problem that is being addressed in this thread...i.e. how to end the mungiki menace and prevent a civil war.
i am sure the likes of mainaT and obi who were advocating for them to be 'wiped out' and contending that land grabbing has nothing to do with it,are now thinking twice from what happened yesterday.

we all agree killing is a crime(by law) and immoral (by universal human values)...whether done by mungiki,the police,or their assistants (the vigilantes) and therefore it can hardly be a solution.

there was an iteresting program on citizen last night hosted by julie (and i suspest nanfor watched it,hehe). freedom fighters were given a chance to air their grievances. they also offered some historical gems (see nanfor below) and what looked like pointers to a solution to our current problems.

mungiki started in the early 80's and has been encouraged by both moi and kibaki regimes. the solution is two pronged - short term (enhance security and preserve life) and long-term (eliminate the demand for mungiki)

one needs to ask two questions:
1. why and how did mungiki come into being?
2. why is it encouraged by the political leadership?

the answers to those questions will logically lead one to the solutions. i leave it up to others to contunue.....

Like I've always said,Kenya ina wenyewe,and wenyewe are the rulling mafia and thier mungiki foot soldiers,the rest are just collateral damage. This government only reacts to protect its mafia interests such as stolen land,corrupt business investments nakadhalika. having dozens of poor farmers in Kirinyaga chopped does not concern them at all.

Like Kiai says,these goons would rather use the police and GSU to protect the raiway from being uprooted or opposition rally from looting their CBD businesses than whether IDP are still living in squalid camps or if Mungiki is harvesting farmers wholesale huko Kirinyaga.

Unless they feel your pain,they will continue to ignore you. What you need to do is make them feel the same pain that those Kirinyaga folks are feeling. Interrupt their business interests and you will see how fast they will address those issues. Until then,sahau getting any action from this mafia.

@Nanfor,monzerat,stockyt,leona and others of the same thinking,I commend you for realising that our society has failed. Once our thoughts change (or have a critical mass of those thinking different),the change in society begins. Our ancestors failed (for example we blame colonialism; I do not! When they came to colonise us our ancestors were sleeping; why did they not build ships and got out colonising?); why did they not venture to Europe and bring back slaves for us to work our land? Instead,they sold their neighbouring brothers and sisters to slavery! When others were inventing,we were building huts (and still are building huts!). Many say we are young - my foot Africans have existed as long (longer,according to Modern out of Africa Theory) mzungu! Our parents failed,we failed and our children will fail and therefore our Nation is failing (hence Mungiki!)

@Tusker Baridi. My friend,hawa unaita wenyewe ni sisi! They are our fathers and mothers,brothers and sisters; sons and daughters. They are that way because society taught them to be that way and society condoned that. You say we target their businesses; wenyewe have no business; their business is looting the treasury! So how does one attack that?

@Tokyo - please,with all due respect,stay in Tokyo.

So many opinions. Non to help me tonight. The vigilants will come knocking at my door and we will go out in the rain to protect our lives and property. Our leaders will not be anywhere to be seen. Maina Kiai and Muite et al,I do not know. Skerians will be at home changing channels. The mungiki will be terminating their next victim. Aemathenge will be out in the cold. Waiting. Atleast the NSE is up today.

@aemangethe

I feel for you bro,question for you though,how do you ensure that the current vigilante does not turn into another Mungiki after clearing them out? There is going to be a power vacuum and I bet you these so called vigilantes will be eager to fill it.

Methinks a permanent solution is to confront the patrons and financiers of these goons who are well known to you and make it clear to them that you will not take this crap anymore. Now that's a blood worth spilling,not the crazed foot soldiers.

I would say Muite and Kiai may have come of age. I guess in defeat,Muite has found his politics... He has adopted the philosophy of Agwambo... The problem with Muite is the Goldenberg money he ate... He also did not do much for Kabete as MP...

What has changed in the old Muite for him to believe he is different from Moi's Cronnies?

@tusker hehu

If I knew of one financier/leader/captain in my area,he/she would be a very dead wo/man! I understand one,a lady Deputy Head teacher went down the other day. As for what becomes of the vigilante group,atleast these are people I know and can relate with. We all have our day jobs that are doing well under the circumstances. We are only protecting our property/lives. In any case,that is a nightmare for another day/month/year. Right now we are living hour to hour,day to day.

Charley-that was a real positive comment. Very nation building. And the word is poetic not prophetic.
