This morning I tuned into Kiss 100 and found a very interesting discussion going on. The presenters were discussing how Kenyans like to bitch about the Government not making a 24-hour economy a reality yet they're still stuck in very industrial-age mentalities themselves.

They discussed auto garages, banks, barbershops and salons as examples of businesses that would benefit a great deal from operating after office hours but typically do not. They also gave examples of Nakumatt 24-hour outlets and banks like CFC, StanChart and CBA that open late into the evening, albeit in selected branches.

They called it running our lives in parallel and put it forward as one of the reasons we all get stuck in traffic jams at the same time every day of the working week. Can't we have flexible working hours so that if one wants to get to the office at 6am and leave at 3pm they should be let to do so? Why are we so obsessed with an 8 to 5 mentality even when it so glaringly works against us?

And while you're discussing that, any service providers whose flexible/creative opening hours you benefit from? NIC Prestige is one for me. Open until 7pm on weekdays and until 4pm on weekends.

I have a friend who has a cyber at Tom Mboya street that opens as early as 5.30am and closes as late as 11pm. He confessed to me that he gets most of the business at those crazy hours since all others are closed and he has gotten a clientelle that will pop in at 9pm and go upto 11. he confessed that if he could get two other businesses in the same building continuing late he would even make it 24hr business, this is the thirst that he has and these are the kind of people who will make our economy go 24hrs. I think RIBZ was right when he insisted on 24hr economy and lighting the streets for security reasons

Security issues must be sorted out for people to feel safe enough to run their businesses at whatever hour.
Jinnah Mbaru ( yesterday's "debate") suggested that courts can also run for 24 hours. I know stations where Judges and Magistrates have been deployed but there are not enough court rooms. Results in a lot of wasted time.
Flexitime is a great idea especially for jobs where people aren't interacting with customers.

- ATMs, sms and internet banking are a form of 24hrs Banking,
- Most Customer Care have 24hrs call/twitter services.

I know of a restaurant that closes at 2A.M and opens at 5AM. Either the owner or his children will be around. He smiles all the way to the bank, taxi drivers, cops, pros and late night clients
