Why is it cheaper?
I would think it is more expensive because you transport materials for longer distances, import skilled fundis, u spend a lot of money traveling to and fro the site in shags etc?
Well except for cement and galsheet/tiles, everything else should be much lower. You are not to import the nairobi fundi's unless for 1 or 2 with special skills but the rest should be locals whom you pay 1/3 the amount. Sand/mbao/transport is definitely lower. But yes depending on your location the above costs may vary.
Again your rural home should not be an exact replica of your city one. You can opt to use different building materials e.g bricks instead of quarry stone, clay tiles instead of ceramic ones, etc. You can buy and transport at once all material that must be bought in the city to reduce on transport costs. You will end up with a descent home at a "fair" cost.
The only time you should be looking down on others is when you are helping them up.
