Some words from Richard Bell, Wananchi Group CEO:
"Here is how things are;
Naspers, a multi-billion
dollar South African
company owns Super Sport and MultiChoice.
Super Sport owns exclusive rights to most of premium sports content in the world
like English Premier League.
Super Sport sells its sports channels exclusively to DStv. They refuse to sell to anybody else. It means to get
those channels you have to subscribe to DStv.
Consequently, they have
managed to block out its
pay-TV competitors. This kind of thing only happens here, nowhere else in the world.
Regulators are asleep, and because Naspers has deep pockets they have effectively been blocking out industry competitors for ages. And we have tried to engage the
regulator, but they won’t
listen and it’s absurd because we are the local champions.
It’s like Kenya Airways trying to exist and regulators give British Airways all the advantage. This is an absurd situation."
As much of a supporter of the 'free market' I tend to think myself of, my opinion is that these guys actions are very anti-competitive. and should be nipped in the bud.
GOD BLESS YOUR LIFE
