He is only 25. You are right he could win a few more accolades before he is done.

Too bad he might not win the world cup. With Brazil hosting the next show, Argentina hawesmek.

He could change his citizenship to Spain then have some real hope of winning a WC!
Otherwise he will still play second fiddle to kina Maradona and Pele!

regardless of what people say winning the World cup is the ultimate challenge. Hiyo kikombe sio mchezo... do you remember RAO was told not to touch it? it is to be touched by past and present worldcup winners, heads of state and FIFA officials ONLY!! Messi hawezi guza hiyo kikombe until he becomes one of the three.

There is a time when the World Cup had more importance and relevance than club football. Now that is not necessarily the case. I personally find the Champions League more interesting than the World Cup. And I am not alone. So this idea of denying a great player recognition just because he has not won a cup competition is pretty crappy.

I agree with you 100% but irrespective of that every great football player wants to lift the world cup for his country. Argentina's current team are under performers just like Spain was for many years - with a squad boasting of Messi,Higuain, Aguerro, Tevez, Di Maria, Cambiasso, Lavezzi,Lamela,Alvarez, Gago etc etc, it is capable of beating any side in the world but they have the crappiest managers ever.

Frankly speaking if Messi never wins the world cup he'll acquire the unenviable tag of being the best player to have never won the world cup, there's still time for Argentina to change that.

I sometimes feel sorry for CR7, he'd be the best player of any footballing generation.....except Messi's of course.

P.S. Things could change in a year but I don't think the current Brazilian squad are good enough to beat Spain

You can't peg ultimate footballing prowess to winning the World cup, if that was the case, then in 2010's Ballon D'or, a Spanish player would have won it.
Give it to the lil' man, he's done amazing stuff in those four years.
To those who just hate Messi, have the floor and tell me why the other two greats never won Ballon D'or four consecutive times.

In my humble opinion this FIFA Ballon is just a joke. My reasons
1. Are there no other good players playing football other than those playing in Europe and particularly Spain? I believe without exposure to other non-european leagues it is not possible to ascertain those voted as the World's "best"
2. The mode of voting for the nominees is not particularly "all round" rewarding for luck of a better phrase. They should have points for goals scored, assists, trophies won, team player etc...
3. The panel should be devoid of bias which is not the case here

All in all this according to me this is just a poll and not a real ranking from statistics.

Anyway i felt Ronaldo should have won it this year NOT because he is the better player than Messi (which is still subjective) but because he achieved more accolades.
The C&P opinion below illustrates better my point of view.

Quote:

I think the point that some people here are trying to make (in vain it seems), is not that Cristiano is the better player. Messi certainly is IMO, and even Ronaldo deep down probably knows that.

The point is that THIS year, he may have deserved it more than Messi. As someone here has already said, if goals count so much in the final decision (with Messi breaking all sorts of records), why didn't CR win it last year? He won the golden boot and the Copa del Rey with RM in 2010-2011 (which Messi won last season) . Ah but in 2010-2011, Barca won La Liga and the Champions League !

So it's titles that are most pivotal in the decision. Then, I believe winning La Liga (with a record 100 points no less) > than winning Copa del Rey, especially when Ronaldo was pulling the team towards the title single-handedly at times.

Again, Messi is the better all-round player. Almost all of us agree on this. But this year? I don't believe so. I think Ronaldo deserved it more.

Guys also need to relax regarding Messi breaking
Gerd Müller's record. The record already belonged to a different man. An AFRICAN! Godfrey Chitalu who scored 107 goals in 1972. Do you know FIFA's response to this? Google and have a chuckle.

Probably it has to do with the fact that the award never existed before 1991?Sad

In Mkeyid's defense, I think he meant Luis Ronaldo and Zidane who won it 3 times...wacheni kutoa mse rangi hivyo bwana.

I agree with Kratos that is they looked at 2011/2012 season achievements, CR7 could have piped Messi to the award but let's be honest Messi was really the best player in the world in 2012. Anyway, we can debate all we want but hio imeisha. The only nonesense I couldn't stand was that FIFPRO team laden with Madrid and Barca players with the exception of Falcao. That was a joke!!!Period!
