A friend of mine is currently employed but is thinking of opening a business consultancy in one year's time, from Jan 2014.

What are the things that my friend must do to have a thriving business.

Nonetheless; any "thriving" business needs a product/service for which there is heavy demand.

Clarify consultancy in which area? If it's more technical its requires expertise if it's knowledge bases it can be more about who you know rather than what you know.Also clarify what the thriving part is.Is it money,clients,market share...
