Dying girl now cancer-free after 'breakthrough' AIDS virus experiment

The last thing you'd expect to be a cure for cancer is AIDS. And though researchers are still far from reaching that milestone, an experiment with a disabled form of the virus that causes the disease has given them great hope. Last spring, Emma Whitehead, a 6-year-old Pennsylvania girl, was near death. Desperate, her parents signed her up for an experimental treatment never before tried on a child. Less than two years later, she's completely cancer-free. The theory is the HIV virus reprograms the immune system to kill cancer cells. Other patients have had mixed results using the same process, but it's being called a "breakthrough" that, with further tweaking, may revolutionize leukemia treatment.

Kaposi sarcoma (a cancer) is mostly found in people who are HIV +ve.

AIDS is the last stage of HIV infection.

"The technique employs a disabled form of H.I.V. because it is very good at carrying genetic material into T-cells."

The scientists did not use live HIV virus but a weakened virus which stimulated the immune system to fight the cancer cells.

A leukemic 6-year old has little chance of surviving an AIDS infection.

But kudos to the scientists for the efforts to fight cancer.

Set out to correct the world's wrongs and you will most certainly wind up adding to them.

When I was in Form 2 - I asked my teacher this exact question and she could not answer it...
If HIV kills White blood cells and Leukemia adds them... in theory...having the two of them should make one 'normal' - right.... she just couldn't get it!
