Here is some advice i give to people in similar circumstances.
1. Recognize the worst that can happen
2. Accept what you cannot change and strive to change what you can
3. Do all that is within your power to prevent the situation from getting worse and to improve it.
Those are the three generic steps.
Further, you need to accpet your place in the organization. Do not strive to make decisions when you are not allowed, Instead find safe ways to pass your ideas to the boss even though he will eventually present them as his own. He will develop a soft spot for you.
I remember a story of a woman who had a really BOSSY boss. He would tell her: make tea for me and put two spoons sugar, then bring it and place it on my table. Once she does that, close the door behind you and go back to your desk etc etc. Her solution; the next time boss called her at the usual time for tea, she walked in briskly and b4 the boss started issuing his usual instructions, she said to the boss: Boss am going to make you tea, i'll put two spoons of sugar, bring it and place it on your table then am going to close the door behind me and walk back to my desk etc etc. Thank u boss ... with a smile. The boss never bothered her again thereafter! Hey, don't try this at your workplace! This was in the UK.
