Drove down to OLORGESAILIE (http://www.museums.or.ke/content/blogcategory/34/60/) over the weekend. And later towards Magadi.
Thought I should share an update in case anyone is planning to go down that way
Magadi road used to be in fairly good condition (well, abt 10-15 years ago when some of us would do the annual bikathon down to Lake Magadi).
From Nairobi up to Kiserian (via Ngong or Rongai) the road is not too bad. Descending from corner baridi its all patched up and bumpy but bearable...after olepolos, closer to kisames it gets pretty bad until the turn off to Olorgesailie. After Olorgesaillie, the next 50 km to Magadi are fairly OK, at least 85-90% of the way.
Few facts:
- Magadi Soda was acquired by Tata Chemicals. - - Magadi is still a very neat and clean town. - There are bandas for rent at Olor...kshs 800 with a double bed or Kshs 500 for two single beds - but very BASIC. Communal pit latrine, communal showers, etc - very rustic but lots of fun if you are into that kind of thing. - no elec at olor... So good idea to carry solar lamps or something. - carry all utensils, crockey, cultery that you need + gas/grill, beer etc. - good mobile signal at olor...(both airtel and safaricom) - Magadi is abt 2.5 hours drive - at sane speeds. - temperatures at Olor... abt 35 celcius - in Magadi much higher thanks to humidity... - Magadi - Nairobi = 120 km (to olor...its abt 70km).
