MILAN (Reuters) - An Italian court on Friday sentenced former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to four years in jail for tax fraud in connection with the purchase of broadcasting rights by his Mediaset television company.

Berlusconi has the right to appeal the ruling two more times before a definite sentence, and will not have to serve any time in jail until his final appeal is heard. Prosecutors had asked for a jail sentence of three years and eight months.

The ruling comes two days after Berlusconi, 76, confirmed he would not run in next year's elections as the leader of his People of Freedom (PDL) centre-right party.

Mediaset shares fell nearly 3 percent after the ruling.

The Italian Justice system is very interesting. The convict will not serve time in jail until the 2 appeal courts confirm the verdict by the lower court. In Kenya, you go to jail pending appeal! BTW, Berlusconi at 76yrs where does he get energy for teenagers?

...In Italy you remain free pending determination of your appeals. In Kenya you are incarcerated immediately on conviction though under the Constitution you are now entitled to bail pending appeal. If you remain in and your conviction is upheld you are given credit for time served. If you are acquitted on appeal you get grounds for a suit against the Government for malicious prosecution
