A used Toyota 103,newly imported from Japan costs about 650K..as per findings at various show rooms and even the Sunday Bazaar @ Jamhuri Park. The CIF price for the same car is USD 4900,or about 378K. Now,according to good old advise in some website and even here at SK,you only need to add a factor of 1.76 to the CIF cost to arrive at the total cost of importing a car from Japan ( i.e. purchase cost+insurance cost+shipping cost+ clearing cost+registration cost). Appliying the factor of 4900 results in about 660K.

My 60 million dollar question is,does it mean the dealers are not making any profit if the factor of 1.76 is correct? I thought the dealers usually make a profit of between 10-15 % for every car imported? Someone please clarify why figures are not adding up. If dealers are making any profit,then this car should cost me 580K maximum if I import myself. Isn’t it?

@BAAK,

The explanation could be that some people are importing cars registered in 2001 and earlier i.e more that eight years old and some how they get the vehicles cleared at the port.....

@BAAK....Toyota A103 I believe is a toyota 100 and I dont think if its possible to import that make to Kenya anymore.(Remember the 8 year rule?).Therfore someone selling you an A103 is simply selling you what he either imported illegally (thereby avoiding to pay statutory deductions) or the 1.76 factor is a mith.Think about it.

Am talking of EE 103,the station wagon with leaf springs.

@ CHAKA

True some could be selling pre-2001 make. But only some! Virtually all cars I saw are going for 650K or there about. But some Japanese firms give discount..is this where the 10% profit comes from?

@BAAK. I've noted some upward movement in prices recently. So it is possible that what u see in the bazaar was bot b4 the rise. Discounts r also given when u buy several units. My question is : what is behind the rise in prices?

Stra. I'm in a similar situation. I 'went to' tradecarview.com and I couldn't make a decision on which exporter to trust. I think KRA should put at least the top 10 exporters of Japanese vehicles on their website.

@Baak The dealers mainly get special discounts by bringing in many units over time from same yard,or bulk purchases. If you can marshal say 10 guys,place a single order from reputable sites- i have no experience with tradeview - you will be amazed at the savings that can then be split among the 10 chaps. There are other tricks of the game,but i guess theory and practice are separate issues.

Additionally,for your info the 103 you mention has been replaced by Toyota Probox- vvti. Shortly,the 103 car will be on the Watch List of KRA's simba system coz of 8 year rule.

And what is the fuss all about 103? The Probox is VVTi,has extra spacious boot,and uses heavy duty rear coil springs.

I think it also has to do with the Grade/Condition of the vehicle. Guys who buy cars for sale buy lower condition vehicles which are obviously cheaper and hence they can manage to price them at such 'reasonable prices'. when you are importing your personal car,i am sure you will want a well conditioned car whose CIF will be much higher than the low condition/grade vehicles. When you do your final costing,you will arrive at more or less the same value,but the vehicle conditions will be very different.

exchange rate also plays a part in the math... this time last yr the rate was lower by 10 bob... which means for US$5000 you save upto 50K

On a need to know basis....

KRA has reviews its Current retail Selling pricing effective August 2009 for all used cars in the market which is having an effect of increasing the Amount of duty/Excise and VAT payable for the vehicles. This has resulted to slight change in vehicle pricing. i.e. Duty for a new look Toyota premio / Allion year of manufacture 2002 before the month of August is approximately Ksh. 256,000. Any car manufacture in 2002 in the month of September taking into consideration we are in August is deemed to be a 2003 car and hence duty payable is approximately Ksh. 350,000.

Its now summer in Japan and therefore cars are slightly cheaper depending on the model now as many people have offered their cars for sale
