Can tell me how Africa benefits from the current intellectual property regime?

Consider the following,

1. Find out how much money 50 Cent offered Chinua Achebe for the use of the phrase "Things Fall Apart" as the title of the movie (FYI, Chinua turned down the offer). The last time I checked, Chinua was as African as the first gal I kissed

2. How much money was Fadhili William offered by Boney M's producers for doing a remix of the song Malaika? Fadhili William si ni Mdavida wa kwetu Kenya

3.If Africans did not benefit from IP regime then I would have taken Ngugi wa Thiong'o's Weep Not Child and titled it Shut up Child and made millions out of it, but I can't because Henry Chakava will sue me to the last Y-front I own. IP regime has ensured Ngugi and other writers make their millions.

4. Poxy Pressure revamped the Music Copyright Society and now musicians earn royalty from their work and can sue you if you dare perform their songs fwaaa

5. Thanks to the hard work by Prof. Peter Wasamba of the Litt dept. at UoN now even oral literature performances are covered by IP Act so our ohangla musicians on the streets will soon start earning from their performances

6. Oxford University Press took Longhorn Publishers to court claiming they had plagiarized their Kamusi. Pray, how does one plagiarize a kamusi? hehe I told you IP laws are known clearly even in Africa, so don't say "WE don't understand" say "I and afew others don't understand IP regime", but just know this it is there and it supports a whole industry

Vinii, you need to understand capitalism as opposed to misconstrued African socialism that ensured our artists and thinkers remained poor. I say misconstrued because in traditional African society artists and thinkers were rewarded for their work. Next time somebody tells you to emcee their gigs and spice with your original jokes, send him an invoice.

Africa is a net importer of Intellectual property only a few people (as mentioned above) have benefited from this regime - majority of Africans pay for stuff that we should not be paying for. Robbing us blind so to speak! The sooner we ask ourselves - what is in it for us? the sooner we stop swallowing things ovyo. If they want to pay us for our works - no problem, we shall not pay them for theirs. Ask the Chinese and Japanese - that is how you cut the line to prosperity. picture this the west went ahead of us and invented some of this stuff that made them industrialize and now go into the post mordern age but they are telling us to reinvent our own stuff in the way they did it or pay them for theirs. While it makes sense for them - it does not make sense for us to agree! We need to dissect IP and decide what is beneficial to us and what is not! I am proud of Kenya - because the current regime does not accept patenting of software.
For those who think I don't know what I am talking about I will tell you that I have enrolled to one of those universities that require that I sign a pact before each course and have to properly quote my sources (i have 2 discussion questions to do after this) in form of references. so believe me when I say - I get the arguments. I have been towing the line for 1.5 years however I don't intend on towing the line for long. I follow it since I want something they have (a degree) and the condition is that i don't plagiarize. however I don't intend on restricting myself unnecessarily any more than I should. Kama bible authors hawaku quote their sources itakuwa ni mimi kujirestrict ovyo?

I actually dare say that we have plagiarized the concept of plagiarism into our culture - coz it does not belong to us. picture this
1.6 billion people in China don't follow it coz using other people's work is considered a compliment on them.
1.3 billion people in india don't follow it coz using other people's work is considered a compliment on them.
1.1 billion people in Africa don't recognize it as well, we sign songs in church without "quoting the source" coz its very good we use it as is - you cannot improve perfection - right?
that leaves Western Europe and the Americas and Australia (culturally from West Europe) that's 4 out of the 7 billion people on the planet that consider the concept as foreign (we have not counted South East Asia). Why do we want to shackle ourselves unnecessarily?

Fine.

She stole. Glory Halluiah. So be it.

My position is that I shall not engage in mob justice.

That I believe is her position also.

Not cower before the mob, vitual citizens from various spheres, Wazua included.

This is between her, the Source, the Intellectual Police, her God and the Devil.

My concern is, did she improve on the stolen material?

Did His Majesty the King of Popular Music (RIP) improve the lyrics he stole from the African he stole from to make "You Wanna Be Starting Something"?

Did Witney Houston improve on the song "I will always love you" she "stole" from Dolly Parton?

I love Caroline Mutoko for what she is. The best in talk show in East Africa. Every body else is just Noise.

Pride and fall in a sentence.. Imagine what she stands to loose if they decide to sue her. Is it worth it for some inflated ego?

@mkwasi, everyone has their own taste. Carol & Jalang'o ati Musee Jalang'o mwenyewe. I get so pissed listening to it but I acknowledge that they have fans who think they're good.

But everyone has their niche. Carol has identified hers(akina mahegoat) and insulted them but they still love her!
