For a while now I've been mulling over a ship building idea at the coast-nothing complex just small tuna boats max. 100 ft.

Tuna commands a good average price. quote]Freshness, texture and right amount of fat content determine the grade of tuna sashimi. And they command the highest price for the day. Early this week, a classifier said the landed price of sashimi tuna was at P250 per kilo (US$5.34) – whole.[/quote]

We have thousands of kms of E.A coastline.and there's billions worth of tuna off the long Somali coast ,especially now with everyone avoiding the whole region. To the best of my knowledge there is only one certified ship builder, African Marine.
I recently stumbled over a blog however that crystallised my thoughts.

The Nigerians and Viets have taken the first steps at local small navy patrol boat building, albeit with gov't help.
Does anyone think this idea worth pursuing locally? A certified yard building both tuna boats and small armed motorboats, aka ultra fast attack craft, like these Sri Lankan examples built with Jap collaboration.

Yes,I'm aware of the challenges involved but our changing economy would I think provide a return on such an investment.

@kayoh you must be marking the links in your post. otherwise you should just have commissioned a feasibility study and approached financiers.

Seriously, we have trouble building dug-out canoes and you want partners for an idea on military boats with SONAR, IR, Radar . . .

Stat, these things are usually bought from the specialist manufacturers and simply installed. You do not have reinvent the wheel here.

I also see more detail is required. These guys were certified by Lloyds in 99,a must to be taken seriously in the world market.

It would seem their decision to partner with Japanese shipbuilders Onomichi dockyards in 93 paid dividends.

No doubt crucial tech transfers such as software design, skilled manpower and hi tech steel laser cutters was included.
The Nigerian experience, from my reading seems to be different. It was an underfunded navy affair that began in late 07 and was finished this year-for a small 100 foot river patrol boat.
Quote:
Between January 2008 and April 2009, the structural frames and shell plating of the hull and superstructure were completed while the main propulsion and power generation plants were delivered. Thereafter, the project was suspended due to funding delays until the incumbent Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral OS Ibrahim revived the project by approving funds for its completion.

Basically we just build the hull, either to local specs or foreign design under licence while the various systems eg the radar, guns and sonar and are added later.
Statmeister,Somalia and the piracy threat is the fast receeding threat to local shipping. When pacified, with a functioning Jubbaland, peaceful rump Somalia, Lamu port up and running can you honestly say this whole region mapped out here isn't worth a serious ship building industry? Do you see no potential for cruise tourism, sport fishing or commercial trawling? From the Horn,Seychelles, our own coast,N.Tanzania to Madagascar.

The Chinese already have and I have it on good authority they wanted to use our waters for commercial fishing.

@Kayoh there is dry dock in mombasa which belongs to Africa Marine its a great place may be you can talk to them for more ideas because they have the facilities to build ship. You can design they build.
Ship/Boat making is not rocket its all about scale.

Actually it was a Danish buddy of mine who was going to organise the ship building equipment of I think a Danish or other Scandinavian builder of 100 foot trawlers, which is on the large size who was going out of business around 95-96.
Specifically there were block positioning units, dual walking beams, docking support arms and even a complete though disassembled shiplift. The equipment though was rated for only small ships specifically. He had a very good deal since the MD was a relative and he had 2 experienced engineers eager to come here while I had 2 serious wazees behind me with equally serious cash. We were waiting for Moi to go and then secure a beachfront lease on about 5 acres then purchase the equipment.
If you remember that era you know how it was. Stagnation and the end of hope. When Moi returned in 98 we all let the matter die. Also this was the pre internet period when int'l phone calls and faxes were either difficult or impossible.
Then LAPSSET manenos renewed my interest of late. I have one or 2 things on my plate for at least 6 months to a a year after which I'll decide whether to go forward or not.
