Between Toyota Corolla NZE and Nissan Sylphy G11 (2006/7+), which one is better in terms of handling, engine performance and reliability?

Forget about comfort, style or design. Asanteni!

In my previous motoring life I have owned a toyota (AE100) and also a Nissan (B14) and the Toyota was more superior in terms of performance (EFI engine), handling, reliability, comfort (independent suspension) and also the design. I believe it must be the same for newer models. The toyota was also more expensive to buy.

I should have added that on the hand I had to change the Toyota's waterpump and timing belt. Also at one time the toyota's sidemirror and corner light were ripped off in town centre and had to replaced. The worst came when the corolla was stolen from a parking lot in town but luckily it was recovered by police after 3 days having been abandoned in some isolated side road in lavington. The thugs had forced open the doorlocks and ignition which I had to replace, also the window electric motor not to mention repainting the bumper since it had a few dents.

For the Nissan it was happy motoring. The only thing I changed was the rear brake light bulb. And it seems the thugs were never interested in the car, or its sidemirrors.

For both cars I had to change the shocks however the nissan's rear shocks were different (oil shocks) and never needed changing.

Looking back, I'd say I spent more money maintaining the corolla due to the said mechanical and crime issues.

And as someone has observed above once you own a corolla, despite it being a good car, you feel like you want to move on and get a different model for a change. Thus my present car isn't a corolla, though its still a toyota.

Too many myths on this thread - if someone knows one Sylphy that has issues, it doesn't mean all the Nissans have issues. I know of a taxi company that has close to 100 NZE's - and their workshop is ever busy. All sorts of problems - including gear box, sensors etc. But that doesn't make an NZE a bad car.

We need to move from castigating brands coz of a few bad examples. I bought a car 4 years ago - I had the options of: NZE, Fielder, Mitsubishi Cedia - at the last minute I came across an Opel Astra on offer by IBC. I can guarantee you that every single person I spoke to discouraged me from buying the Opel. I went ahead and bought it after doing my own research. It cost me 200K less than the Fielder & NZE. It costs me the same exact amount per service and consumes the same as the 1.8 premio (which is now at 1.2M), fielder and even the wish. As far as I am concerned, pundits can scream from the rooftops - but I made a good decision.

I advise that you do your research - listen to opinions first then do your research against those opinions. Ultimately, buy what will make you happy and what will make you feel that your money was well spent.

As I said in my post, this argument is usually determined by who shouts the loudest e.g. Honda has been having Vvti Technology in their cars since 1992. Toyota joined the fray somewhere in year 2000,and boy oh boy, haven't they harped about it.. In the meantime, its good to see there are more people out there who think outside the box and steer away from the noise.

I think the problem is that when people are buying cars it's never purely a financial decision i.e the best option in terms of cost and benefit. Neither do people just look at the technology since nearly all car makers nowadays have nearly similar technology VVti, FSi, GDi, D4, Mivec, Divec, CDi etc. Other factors, social, peer, emotional, perception issues come into play. It's more like fashion, wanting to belong. It's nothing to do with financial logic. That is why the more expensive toyotas are so popular in Kenya. Who thought a premio would be more expensive than a subaru? The japanese must be perplexed by the peculiar Kenyan habits.

Looking at the new car prices CRSP list as given by KRA, one notices something interesting. All the following cars are valued at 2.4m: Toyota Corolla, Premio, Allion, Fielder. Also Mitsubishi lancer, VW Golf GTi.

Subaru impreza and Mazda axela are valued at 3m and 3.4m respectively. Sunny/Sylphy at 2m, Golf (not gti) 1.9m, Prombox 1.8m.

So why the huge discrepancy in the used car prices for the above vehicles. The used japanese premio is going for 1.2m, corolla/fielder 900k, lancer 700k, subaru impreza 800k, nissan sylphy 650k, golf 1m, prombox 600k.

Yes loud the Toyota people shout but let me put it here that even with vvti 1500cc nze still consumes more fuel than my Nissan Sunny B15 manual transmission. I have had it for 3 yrs now, and I think am stuck with Nissan. The next car should be X-trail or Navara.

@Jaggernaut - The prices on the CRSP list are usually provided by the local dealers of the models. So, if the local dealer quotes a very high showroom price [Toyota Kenya and Subaru Kenya are culprits here], the consumers are screwed.Sad

@Jimmy1 I disagree with you, though I stand to be "collected".

The prices on the CRSP list are usually obtained from the local dealers e.g. Prices for Toyota are obtained from Toyota Kenya. The prices quoted are usually based on how much the dealer would sell the car if it was brought ex-factory (Toyota Japan) to their local showroom (in Kenya)as brand new.

HOWEVER, sometimes the local dealers can be devious (as in the case of Subaru Kenya). If they feel a certain model in their show room is being affected by direct imports from Japan, all they do is advise KRA that the price for that model has gone up, hence very high taxes. Otherwise, how would you explain the price difference of about 1 Million between the Subaru Legacy Sedan (BL5) and the Subaru Legacy Wagon (Bp5). This is the same car in all respects, only that the body shape is different.

@benzino,the question was why different vehicles e.g toyota & mitsubishi with the same or almost the same crsp value & same cc rating have a huge price difference in the kenyan second hand market

It's always rumoured/said that KRA compares the CIF value against the depreciated CRSP value then uses whichever is higher to calculate duty. For your case, CIF =USD 7,000 assume 1$=Kes 84.5, 7 year old car. Your duty will be calculated on the amount of Kshs 591,500 which comes to Kshs 451,019

Customs value 591,500
Import Duty 25% 147,875
Excise Value 739,375
Excise Duty 20% 147,875
VAT Value 887,250
VAT 16% 141,960
Total Taxes 437,710

IDF Fees 13,309
Grand Total 451,019
+ Motor Vehicle Registration 12,000

Confirm with a clearing agent as i'm no expert.

The reason is simple, duty is not the only factor u must buy the car first and cost depends on how popular a model is thats why a tiny Toyota IST will cost 5000usd to buy alone and a sunny teanna or mazda supremacy cost 3500usd to buy. Shipping cost is based on volumetric size and logistics involved ie if a seller is based in a port city like Kobe or Nagoya will cost less to ship that one who has is based in a mainland town.It true Toyota is sometimes overpriced but so are beatifull women i havent seen anyone give a hot girl 200 for fare

As we talk my friend in langata is awaiting to raise 60k to buy a new wingroad engine after speding 18k trying to fix. Its a 2005 KBQ.NZE unless u drive it without oil or water will never stop on its own.I was toyota biggest hater until i bought the sylphy.

i should read through threads.bought a sylphy yesterday for 800k.was attracted by its looks and the fact that it is 1490cc.was ripped.

I am selling Nissan Slyphy at Kshs.650k.It is 2005 model, new shape with brand new Bridgestone tyres.Has done only 65530kms.
