Who will be the top performer this just passed quarter? Point out & defend. My guess

1. MSC - riding on the 150% investment write off, good rains in Western Kenya and a massive demand for sugar at higher prices
2. HFCK - there's a lot of construction going on now despite the economic crisis and they've really tried to get to the middle market.
(both of these companies should ride on their momentum from half year results

hold up blogger, msc 150% write off on investments i dont know how that will add to the bottomline, bcoz what they taught me at strathmore is that any write off on investments or inventory is expensed in the income statement, unless they write is viewed beneficial from the tax point of view where the write off is used as a deffered tax asset.

the best performing coprorate going 3rd quota will cooperative bank given the following:

1) the investment of monies raised in the 2008 ipo being invested to expand their branch network e.g ruiru branch ( w.i.p)

2) the changes in the management team, sources privy to such information can confirm these changes especially in the business development, client services, finance and bancassurance

3) cooperative bank has ventured in the lucrative mortgage sector currently under domination by S&L,with their subsidiary ( not sure on its exact name)

4) coperative acquired a securities firm ( not sure its name),its proving that coop is becaming a one stop shop for one's financial needs at the same time serving a diverse clientele

ruckus,no relations

Unfortunately KPLC is the kind of company that if it makes huge profits - everyone in public will be complaining so hard! It's tough for a company to be in a situation when the public mood is against you making money.
COOP - was asleep as EQTY ran away with the money. However they have a lot of experience and the slow tortoise might eventually win the race.
Mumias - TARDA is almost operational! I lost money on this counter when I bought it at 60 and had the sense to sell it when it hit 30. I pity those still counting their losses. However now its cheap,It's time for me to make money on this succccccker.

@ General

Its time for KPLC staff to start preparing for a major retrenchment, with the new prepaid billing system there wont be need to keep all those meter readers and cashiers

The General, the prepaid thing is good but I think KPLC is taking advantage of the consumers through, when they introduced I used to get about 53.9Kwhrs with 500/=,my shock the other day it only gave 27kwhrs!!!!....more than 100% increase in cost!!!!

The chief value of money lies in the fact that one lives in a world in which it is overestimated.

One thing that guys keep forgetting is that KPLC is profit making institution, not a NGO. It's Government job to give neccesary tax breaks to its citizens

As long as KPLC is sole distribuator electricty in Kenya ...it is a good buy for me....

Parable:-

In a certain place in Kenya called Olkorrok north of Olekajiado, farmers are not allowed to directly sell or consume milk themselves. The only registred and licensed milk dealer is Kamau. and Kamau sets the price of buying price from farmers and selling price to farmers themselves and to rest of the consumers.

Farmers:- Kengen

Kamau:- KPLC

kengen is allowed to sell to the public lakini they need the lines... KPLC owns the roads...

What happens if others can be licensed to build transmission lines...does that change the dynamic? This is the on-going experiment with Lake Turkana Wind Power and will change the way investors look at energy markets in Africa. The competitve advantages (aka moat) enjoyed by the market players KenGen (Generation),Kentraco (Transmission) & KPLC (Distribution) may not be so clear cut then.

Well... in many countries the 'producer' can sell directly to consumers... of course, these tend to be the larger consumers... e.g. supplies to Bamburi or Bidco's factories... KPLC has the infrastructure for retail distribution... Kentraco is the 'bridge' between producers (eg IPPs,KenGen) & KPLC or possibly the larger consumers...

Well the 3Q is over (except for the announcement of results). Only banks,EA Cables & Total seem to report quarterly results. I wish all firms had to do so.
*** Note when I say 4Q I mean calendar Qs.
