Political pronouncements aside - why does KQ always undertake retrenchment to bolster their performance?

KQ's Mission is to maximize in profit making, not to create employment. Notice, they are acquiring new planes 787 that consume less fuel, greater capacity and covering long distances.

The cabin crew are part and parcel of their CORE function. It would be suicidal to out-source their service! It would be like a hotel outsourcing waiters.

Two things: I suspect the PM just aired the opinion that KQ should reconsider the staff lay-offs but our good old media reported that he "directed" the airline to suspend the plan.

Nevertheless; I also suspect that he formed his opinion with little information - like many here who are supporting his standpoint. It is good to start by understanding KQ's side. And this PRESS RELEASE is a good starting point

They dont even need to outsource. What they need is to fire the old timers and hire fresh staff who are able to perform at lower pay levels.

trying to divorce unemployment rate from politics is a pipedream. even the US had to bend over backward to save their auto industry. infact unemployment is what will lead to BO unemployment this nov

If anybody should be getting the sack then its the top management

Am with PM on this one. Kq should call the workers to the negotiating table, may be even propose a pay cut. also they should clarify why they are top heavy with expats
Like it or not KQ is a strategic national asset and pm has all the rights to question their impact.

What are you smoking??? The government sells the company to us and it is still a "national asset"? GOK is a shareholder owning less than 1/3 of the company!

The PM is asking the right questions as who? We have structures and institutions for a good reason! This populist political interference can cripple the economy!

Ati KQ should call the workers bla bla bla. KQ has a board and a management team. They discuss and decide on the best way forward. They should not consult you or the PM unless it is in your/his capacity as a shareholder and if there is voting to be done it's done proportional to your/his shareholding. Hapana leta communism and emotions to the running of a publicly listed company in a capitalist country!

See what Mugabe has done to Zimbabwe!!!

capitalism doesnt operate in a vaccum esp when it comes to mass lay offs. In ke retrenchment has negative connotation

Muhika, If you went to business school am sure you learnt that the single most important objective of a company is to make PROFIT and grow the share holder value, without that the company is non-existent. Read their vision, its very clear and note on the mission where they mention employees - its in maximizing their satisfaction. Simply said, KQ cant satisfy the bloated workforce and still continue to grow the shareholder value. And note the company in not in existence to employ people, its there to screw competition and make mula
