Finally after a long wait and the National Housing has seen the sense in the need for a comprehensive housing data.
National population Census over the years since 1989 have attempted to provide basic benchmark housing data which should be supplemented by specialized surveys. The last comprehensive National Housing Survey in Kenya was conducted in 1983 and only the urban component of the survey was analyzed. Consequently there is a huge data gap especially the housing situation in the rural areas.
National housing Policy for Kenya (Sessional Paper No 3 of 2004) calls for periodic monitoring of the housing sector as basis for feature national housing policy review and implementation of housing programs. Ministry carried out a survey to determine the number of approved building plans between 2003 and 2007 in all local authorities countrywide. The exercise did not yield much fruit because it was realized that many developments take place without necessary approvals.
