A friend of mine woke up one day about a month ago and could not move his limbs, soon after he couldnt move his hands,3 days after, his diaphragm followed suit after which he had to be assisted with the help of machines to breath and carry out any other tasks normally perfomed by organs below the neck. His Doctors at the Kenyatta Hospital ICU has it that his motor neurons normally found in the spinal cord and are responsible for body movement are destroyed,as a result he suffered upward paralysis from his feet to the neck, according to the doctors he can take any length of time depending on age and other various factors to recover. but they are yet to find the cause of this condition and thus the cause for my worry...

Is there anyone at SK who knows of a good hospital for such kind of an ailment anywhere in the world. probably one that specializes in such conditions?

@ Ericks,sorry for your friend...

this is a serious health issue that i would recommend you and his family to consult the relevant health bodies for advice...

even though SK could be resourceful,i bet you would not rely on it...

anyway all the best...

Sorry for your friend @Ericks. Thats sad. What conditions could that be? coz that way,it is easy to ask the doctors or other specialists for the hospitals specialising with such conditions.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

@Ericks - sounds like a slow progressing stroke - affecting different parts of the brain as a clot makes its way in there - starting with impairment of the furthest extremities...not sure why KNH are not suggesting as much. a CT Scan and MRI should show that. Delayed treatment (and misdiagnosis) can make the effects permanent. Did your friend suffer a blow or have a compound fracture anywhere?

@ Kamaa..

yeah actually it is a very serious health issue..... KNH and Karen hospital doctors have been looking into it for the last one month that he has been in the ICU... we have also contacted KEMRI and we are waiting for their response.... we however feel we should widen the net research wise and thats why we are looking for any posible info on hospitals that has dealt with this condition before. just in case they can shed more light on it or do better than what is already being done,i have heard of one in south africa but am yet to get the details.

@ drz...

Thanks a lot for that link, its quite informative and that particular condition (Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) fits his symptoms,i think we could use that name and its related conditions in the search for specialized hospitals...

@ Wendz ...

He has the symptoms like the ones for GBS whose link @ drz.. posted earlier on this thread,it could be it or one related to it. so i think you can use the name to inquire..

@ Djinn

An MRI was done but nothing was found in his brain,,,,he has never suffered any blow that he or i know off,he has no compound fracture either... there is no family history on this case and he also doesnt have history of experiences that can cause a stroke unless there is a new type....

Ericks,
Rush and Consult the Doctors treating him and others with this GBS,from i think Dr.Zhivango below,it looks like it to me also even as a layman.

The problem with the very rare diseases (1 in 100,000) like this one is that they often get misdiagnosed as what now appears to be happening to your friend with them saying the nerves are dead.

I have read that up to 85% recover fully with proper treatment. Let the Doctors rule out this thing and don't listen to one doctor only, push around, consult other doctors as some don't like being corrected and time is moving, move fast.

I am a general consultant, specializing in all areas.

@Ericks - sorry man. Cast the net a bit wider....I put my faith in Aga Khan - as a university hospital I think they also have an equally good arsenal of specialists...how old is your friend? Sometimes people overlook strokes because the risk factors do not appear to be there....age,diabetes,obesity,smoking,etc....these days even a 25 year old can suffer a stroke...which is why I asked abt possible trauma...or perhaps he had an operation a while back?

@ Kamaa.... Thanks man...

@ Djinn.... The guy is 30 years of age,i dont know much about strokes but i think an MRI would have found something in his brain that would lead to a stroke related conclusion.... fluid samples from his spine were send to agha khan and nairobi hospital for testing, thats how the doctors found out that his motor neurons appear to be dead and thus not functional....
@ Much know...... Thats exactly what we are looking for, doctors who can tell for sure or rather to a high degree of probability that its the right condition being diagnosed therefore speeding up his recovery......

Sorry man. Do some research on MND's (Motor Neuron Diseases) aka ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) now that you say the motor neurons are dead. ALS though affects people between the ages of 50 - 70. Had an uncle with ALS and he was treated in South Africa is very ok right now. Had the same symptoms as your friend.

@Ericks

My cousin says he was at Edendale Hospital (I hope I got the spelling correct) though the doctors came from India and Pakistan. Have no further details but I can ask my cousin if you require any.

I will also remember him in Prayers.

Mean while you can try Dr. G. S. N. Wanene. He is an ardent researcher in the field of medicine and a practicing medical doc. He has a Private Hospital in Kikuyu Town. Unfortunately i dont have his contacts for now. The hospital is located on the outskirts of Kikuyu town past the railway lines,i think (I am not sure and i have been there once in 2006) on your way to Ondiri. Once in Kikuyu town, request to be directed to Wanene's Hospital. He is popular in the town.
