Nice post. I've always been against tuition for "minors". Why don't they just do with class 7 & 8 and 4th form alone? My rule is:
- kids go to school during school term,
- holiday is for madrasa in the morning and homework and play in the afternoon,
- then visit upcountry to see their grandparents & other relatives.

This way, their time is fully occupied and no much room for "idleness".

[quote=Njung'e]Tuition is nothing but money minting and it's sad to what extent teachers will go to get that extra buck. Some of the consequences are just but very sad.

It's absurd to force kids in lower classes.
But again at times we blame teachers too much when we parents are to blame.
Whose fault is it if a kid is slow?
I know a school where only the slow minds are adviced to go for tuition with the parent's support and approval.
Why,ask yourself should 2 kids in same class, same teacher, same class/homework end up performing diff?

If I had a slow kid ataenda tuition! not sit at home playing comp games, movies, eating burgers and growing fat in the ears.

By the way when I was growing up in std 2,my dad employed a kiteacher to be teaching us over the weekends, imagine weekend time for our fav.programmes.!!nkt.
Damn we hated him to date.

The teachers want to make extra cash while the parents dont want the headache of looking after the kids during holidays so both are to blame but the parents should refuse. If your child is slow you can legally get him/her a private tutor.

@essyk, i believe if a kid is slow in class, he probably has another gift like music, football, athletics, comedian etc. all these gifts cannot be discovered if the kid is only subjected to one environment.

parents needs to be more engaged in the learning process of their kids and ensure teachers to their work right. we have cases of best schools in the country finishing their syllabusss before mid year and start revisions to exam time.

@Rock private is more expensive I think.
Parents don't feel comfortable with 'teachers' in their homes'not forgetting there is a maid around.
Pray unless we employ female teachers to do the job.
The teaching will become more 'private'!

Tell that to a stressed sweaty kenyan parent struggling to force a professional career out of his son or daughter.
Hatujafika hapo where these other talents are tapped properly and made to look attractive.
Even churchill's mother keeps asking him to get a job. She's convinced that comedy is not a career yet anafaidika.
You and I know that passing the national exam is the hallmark of excellence here.

Ithink it should not be a school policy, like someone says ,its an individual parent who should decide about tuition for their kid.Private tuition should be done in private institutions or at home and for parents whose kids are in need, else if parents allow it in school, teachers will never complete the syllabus in the stipulated time as they have more time during holidays when they can also make more money.
In my days, the subjects were more and we never went for school holiday tuition.but my mom got me one on my last primo year to help me with math, tuitor used to come home.

Alot of parents happy to skive the responsibilities over their kids during hols, hence society behaviours changing from bad to worse!
