Billionaire Soros takes Man U stake

By Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Billionaire financier George Soros is getting in on the game, taking a minority stake in soccer club Manchester United.

Soros disclosed in a regulatory filing on Monday that he owns 7.85 percent of Manchester United's Class A shares. The filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was made by Soros' hedge fund, Soros Fund Management LLC.

The 134-year-old English Premier League soccer club went public on the New York Stock Exchange earlier this month.

The American family that owns the team, the Glazers, have voting control over it through Class B shares that have 10 times the voting power of the stock sold to the public.

The Glazer family also owns the American football team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Malcolm Glazer is CEO of First Allied Corp., a holding company with numerous business interests. His two sons Avram and Joel are co-chairmen of Manchester United.

While Manchester United has rabid fan support, it did not receive as hearty of a welcome on the public stock market. Its debut over a week ago was considered disappointing, with enthusiasm for the celebrated team overshadowed by its debt load and financial track record. Manchester United carried 416.7 million pounds ($666.2 million) in debt as of March 31. It had no debt when it was bought by the Glazer family in 2005.

Manchester United's stock closed at $14 on its first trading day, valuing the club at $2.3 billion, slightly higher than the record $2 billion paid for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team earlier this year.

What a shitty footballing model by City....Arsenal bought Adebayor for 3M pounds and 3 years later sold him to City for 25M pounds and 3 years later they sell him to Spurs for 5M pounds??? And still pay him over half of the wages for 2 years??? Unsustainable! Maybe that's why Mancini was complaining about no signings, their new director of of football was brought in specifically to ensure that sort of business does not continue to happen.

ION, yesterday ESPN reported that Man Utd had lost a combined total of around 1,200 days ( I forget the exact figure) due to injuries in the 2011/2012 season as opposed to City's 182 days!!! And they still lost on goal difference! Now it is very clear that Man Utd will not have it that easy this time - all the teams have gotten better yet Man Utd have started off the campaign with Jones, Rio, Smalling and Evans all out and Fletcher still an unknown. That's like having Kompany, Lescott and Toure all missing for City. Fergie has to address what is the source of all these frequent and long injury spells across the board (remember Cleverley and Anderson last season?)

If Fergie does not address the root cause of this re-curring problem then I guarantee that Man Utd will have another trophy-less season!Remember United were on the verge of winning an unprecedented 4 league titles in a row before losing it by 1 point to Chelsea under Ancelotti in a season where Fletcher and an inexperienced Evans played as center halves in a season where Vidic and Rio were out for a combined period of around 4 months! Same thing happened last season until we resigned Scholes who actually single handedly kept the race with City for the title alive. That is NOT going to happen this season!!! Fergie should buy more defensive cover and a steely midfielder as he addresses the injury problems.

Repeated Post.
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

I was amazed by that deal!!! Adebayor earns a cool £175,000/= a week and has 2 years remaining in his contract. Tottenham want to sign him but they don't want to break their strict wage structure so they decide they can't pay him more than £80,000/=. Adebayor decides it's better to earn £175,000/= a week sleeping than £80,000/= playing and refuses to sign the deal! So Man City have to come to a comprise. Sell Adebayor to Tottenham for £5m, Tottenham pays him £80,000/= a week while Man City pays him £95,000/= a week!!! How F-ed up is that [for City]. In the next two years City will pay Adebayor a cool £10m while he is playing for the opposition. Last year they paid him at least £5m on top of what Tottenham were paying him!!! Do the maths.

Having sold him for what is in the range of £4m - £5m and paying him at least £15m over three years, Man City have basically given Adebayor to Toteenham free of charge and given them £10m so that they can accept him!!!

And what's more, this is not an isolated case. For most of the Man City players out on loan, Man City has to meet a huge percentage of their wages because they are just too high for the host clubs! But this one for Adebayor has just broken the records. You sell a player and continue paying him wages higher than what his new club is paying him and the amount you sold him for is actually less than a third of what you will end paying him??? WTF???

Kudos to Adebayor! Things couldn't have gone better for him. He gets to play regular football and keep his fat pay cheque. How cool is that?
