Wins the Chicago Marathon with a new course record 2:05:41 and a pay day to boot.

Appearance fee: $250,000.00

Winning check:$,75,000.00

Course Record: $100,000.00

Marathon Majors winners check: $500,000.00

Just shy of a million dollars all in a day's work.

This guy is fantastic. I think we may be seeing the making of the first athletic Kenya Shilling Billionare. He is 22 years old. The marathon peak age is above 30. He has a great personality and a very photogenic smile that will earn him millions more in product endorsements.

For the record,Samuel Wanjiru is not illiterate. He completed his high school education in Japan. He speaks English with a heavy accent and that is not illiteracy. If you have listened to Ngugi wa Thiongo you would also note that he too speaks with an accent. Many times people have confused speaking English with literacy and even sometimes with intelligence. Please note that some of the world's most literate countries do not use English. (Cuba,Belarus,Slovenia,Latvia,Korea,Japan etc.)
Having said that,Wanjiru is not a news reader or an English teacher and let us judge him in his field. If ever there was eloquence in running,he is the Martin Luther King of the marathon.
People think marathon running is just talent. Well that is half of it. The other half is a lot of hard work and discipline. Ask any Kenyan athlete who has ever been in a training camp with Paul Tergat and they will tell you that he is the most hard working person they know. Samuel Wanjiru is no different. This man hits the road hard and from the age of 15 while at camp his dedication to training was noteworthy. His 4 wins in 5 marathons are a product of grueling hard work,a passion for excellence and a desire for self improvement. Even as everyone else talks about him breaking the world record (which he will do in due course) his focus has always been to improve his personal best,to run a better time. He is the world record holder in the 20 kilometres and the half marathon and from his 2 years in the marathon he sure has it in his sights to be one of the greatest marathoners. This young man represents something great, the values we would all love to have and instill in our children to be successful,so let us not judge him by his accented interview in a foreign language after he has given a world class performance at what he is truly good at.

kusadikika, you are completely right on the mistaken believe that if you cannot speak good english then you are illiterate.

personally do not know wanjiru so would know nothing of his work ethic but you do not win any race, more so a marathon,by sitting on your butt. you need to practice and work like hell.

that is why i usually get irritated when some people, after an athlete has won a race with some serious prize money attached,go like '... oh he won one million dollars for only ten seconds/two hours/one hours etc of work ( hint- the time it takes to run, complete and win the relevant race).'

@magigi and company.............tell us that day you made half of what wanjiru made in chicago out of your literacy complexities and I will join you in whatever the undertaking it is..!!

Wanjiru has been training day in day out.....that excellent one day's performance is as a result of many months of serious training.....but not for speaking english.

Question: Are these winnings taxable? If they are taxable, are the amounts the winners receive gross or net?Are the winnings taxed in the country of the event and if so are they taxed again when the winners come back to Kenya?

your name befit your attitude...

and your post, depict your level of intelligence...

now that you are more 'illiterate' than wanjiru, take your time and check out the meaning of the following words, literate, eloquence, knowledge, wise, intelligence & skills..

then, you will notice the difference and help you in future not to judge a book by its cover...

@Magigi;

you are so misinformed,it hurts!

You write: 'I understand those fellas carry the dollars in a bag and go all the way to deposit in Eldoret banks...where they can explain themselves in their vernacular... Some little eduaction (sic) is good for them...'

Only ONE Kenyan athlete was reported to be carrying his winnings in cash from some European race. This was the pnly way he could legally AVOID pay taxes on the money...and note 'AVOID',not EVADE!!

...what is in a name? A rose by any other name would just smell as sweet. Where I come from Kamaa means a stupid pig. But that is neither here nor there.

....Anyway I retract my comments about Wanjiru.

Congratulations are in order for Samuel 'Wanziru'. This young man has worked extremely hard and he deserves all that he's got and more. People should not hate. Let them work as hard in what they are good in and one day they'll reap the fruits.

@Magigi - You are just a hater. Now,what would I want to be? Too much 'class' and no money (like one Magigi) or too much money and no class and 'no class' (Like 'those fellas'). You can be sure as hell I wouldn't want to be you! With money you can hire stylists, spokesmen, trainers (in all kind of stuff) but you can't hire anyone to make money on your behalf if you are broke in the first place - Get the picture. One more thing,it looks like you also need to get some eduaction!! Whatever that is!!!

@Magigi

it is good you retracted. that was an unfair comment on the young man. Despite not speaking the 'englishman' english, the boy got a brain. I had an opportunity to watch a programme where he was being interviewed. And boy,the amount of time and money he is putting back to the community is must unbelievable. Many of us cant even give back 1k in a year - he has founded a camp where he is nurturing talent in Nyahururu (by the way,the guy is not from eldoret and there sure must be banks in Nyahururu).

He gave his story and i can tell you what he has achieved is not out of luck. it is out of recognition of his talent and working hard towards achieving his dreams from a one very very humble background. And as 'illiterate' as he may look, the guy has made many investments back home.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

@ magigi

you must have got the meaning of the words....

your act of expunging the earlier post = wisdom ( to hide your ugly mind from the public)..

you also showed intelligence by withdrawing your statement...

however, you need to improve on your skills when posting in forums that have no spell checker...

lastly,i always thought a pig is a pig...none cleverer than the other...LOL!

GG,
I think the world record can still be broken in Chicago. Wanjiru,Kipruto and Manyeki led by Patrick Ivuti crossed the halfway mark at exactly 62 minutes which was a little faster than Gabreselasie's world record half way mark. The pace dropped significantly immediately Ivuti the pacesetter dropped out halfway. Wanjiru did pick up the pace again at 1 hour 42 minutes but he had already lost time. The temperature at around 0 degrees centigrade was also a bit too cold. I think if they were to cross the halfway mark at 61 minutes, which is not impossible because Wanjiru is the half marathon world record holder at 58:33,and then get a pace setter to go further maybe upto 30 kilometres or even better all the way like Sammy Korir did with Tergat in his World Record run at Berlin a sub 2:03:30 is possible. A temperature a little higher than freezing yet not warm and no wind would also help. Having watched Wanjiru run I think it is just a matter of time before he nets the world record. He has the ability to keep up with any fast rabbit and the stamina to stay on. The record could however come to Kenya through a few other athletes out there. Kenya holds 16 of the 25 fastest marathon times ever ran. There is still Duncan Kibet,Kenya's record holder at 2:04:27. Vincent Kipruto who finished 4th in Chicago who is just 21. Martin Lel is also a serious contender.

All,

I missed watching the Chicago Marathon yesterday, although I saw the news clip. It was a great run. This young man will break the World record. His coach said as much when he insisted that the challenge for Wanjiru's pace makers is to hold him down, otherwise he runs himself and everyone else to the ground.

In his uninhibited running style he reminds me of John Ngugi. But I agree it will not happen in Chicago or New York. Berlin,or maybe Rotterdam, are the only tracks I can think of fast enough to break Haile Gibresselasie's Berlin run of 2007.

For those who think it is an easy thing to run a 2.05 marathon, like Wanjiru did, think about this. To prepare for the Marathon,he was doing more than 180Km a week for at least 12 weeks before Chicago. To run a 2.05 he had to do every one of 42 Km in 3 minutes or better. Think about that when you talk of an easy win. It is nothing but.

Finally I feel truly proud that our African runners (unlike footballers) are known for their humility rather than their arrogance. Think of Kip Keino,Tergat, even the great Haille himself. I met Wanjiru in Ndakaini recently. He did not run; he did not even have to show up. However I understand he made his debut here (the toughest half Marathon on Earth) and his debt of gratitude would not keep him away.

That is true greatness in my book, not the ability to speak Queens English.
