I got this problem with my car where buy there is this knocking sound as i drive. The sound only is heard when you are in the car and engage drive and the knocking begins. If you put neutral the sound disappears or when on drive and u release the accelerator the knocking stops. It gets louder when you driving on a hill or turning right. At high speed you can hardly hear it. My mechanic has changed the CV joints, checked the bearings, brake disk, changed the bushes, the drive shaft is not touching anything, nothing is broken, and my mechanic finally told me go to Toyota Kenya.
So is anyone with a clue whats wrong with my car, thou it drives on well, but am afraid something huge may brake down as time goes on.

Kindly help.
Regards, Changai

Funny the mech decided to concentrate on everything else apart from the engine!Had he checked whether there is oil leakage? oil & oil filter status? Hope you wouldnt need an engine overhaul!

gear box related most likely - if automatic suspect the torque converter.

I suggest u check a few basics before embarking on some major overhaul
1-check the exhaust system, it might be knocking the car body/chassis on drive because thats when the car vibrates more and this might be transmitted gear lever (happened to me when coming from upcountry almost thought the gear box was falling off)
Also could happen if one of those nuts holding onto the exhaust drop off
2.- if you have a jua kali (mabati -it is normally plastic for most cars) sub-guard check if its in contact in the body or chassis as well since would make some noise if rubber bushes not well fixed.

wish you well

Laughing out loudly d'oh! d'oh! d'oh!

Could be exhaust clamps are worn out. Also check the engine mounting.

Thanks for your response, actually there are no oil leaks anywhere in the engine. The oil filter is intact no leaks neither.

As @ndume suggests; it will probably be a very basic problem. I had similar noise with my car, it turned to be the bonnet: it was not latching tightly enough. So I adjusted the rubber cushions on either side.

Check also the mountings - both for gear box and engine.

Your mechanic is incompetent! Worn CV joints make noise only when the vehicle is turning round a corner, not when stationary!!!!

And the ones at Toyota Kenya (or any other dealer for that matter) are even worse!

Check the exhaust system, the exhaust might be loose and/or has left its normal line setting. When you engage the car it vibrates and hence the noise, when at high speed the car is steady and there is less vibration and less noise.

Thanks for your response, actually its not the bonnet, this knocking happens when the car is on motion especially when on low speed, if i engage neutral still when on motion the sound isnt there.

Post a sound clip for diagnosis.

Remember incompetent mechanics can make you spend money on guess work Liar . Please do not replace any more part until you're sure of the problem.

I suspect one of the below:
- torn gearbox mounting or
- loose nuts holding the clutch system hence causing vibration when you release clutch

It's now two weeks, are you still pushing the poor car? And why do you think we don't need an update after soliciting our opinions? Some people can be mean d'oh!

Most people told you to check the exhaust mountings, engine n GB mountings. Did you even check those?? I highly suspect the exhaust pipe system knocking on the body at low revs.
