The only useful thing for wider humanity that CERN has done is the invention of the World Wide Web (not to be confused with the Internet, that was discovered by DARPA).
When Einstein formulated his E=mc^2 it was said that these were fanciful flights of theoretical physicists that would never be put to practical use. Less than 40 years later it resulted into the atomic bomb. You dont know what this Higgs Boson will result into.
@bkismat ...the atomic bomb didn't turn out so well for humanity, especially the Japanese. Bad analogy there Sir. That being said, the mathematical properties and behaviour of the Higgs boson have been known and proven for many many years now, actual proof may be of little value - I stand to be collected though .

However, CERN has been smashing particles together for decades now, with little of their research finding its way to mainstream use, other than to prove theories that only 50 people in the whole world understand - For the billions of cash they use, the results are not justifiable. That is why I remain sceptical
