This is interesting, very interesting and worrying as well. Watu wakuwaza what do you make of this:

RINK

............There is a gradual shift in the American military interests in the East and Central African region. Whereas they used to savor Kenya and Ethiopia, the Americans are more interested in a powerful Uganda and a weak Kenya. ...... By providing the solution to Uganda’s longest internal security problem, the US scores well in closing a significant bilateral trade agreement which covers oil imports from Uganda at fairly cheap rates in exchange for defense and intelligence technology and support.
It becomes complex for the Americans since Kenya joined the league with oil discovery and the Americans had to try, and change their hardened stance.
What we are witnessing is the usual ‘petro-dollar’ diplomacy and the Americans are desperate for a each of the cake. There is a high possibility of increased funding to the Kenyans owing to the big and functional economy, besides, if their oil is confirmed commercially viable, and the electioneering assails peacefully, besides winning the war in Somalia, the Americans will redraw their military cooperation with Kenya before the end of 2012 (sic) Shame on you Shame on you Good reason why Ubako's Easterly policies need to be adhered to going forward.
While the US Defense department insists, it had carried out similar projects in Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Uganda, and Burundi, it is the efforts, and a series of military programs throughout 2011 and 2012 in Uganda that rules out mere enhance the capabilities of Eastern African countries besides mitigate and eliminate the threat to civilians and regional stability.

What US has always done is to support opponents of leading nations in every geopolitical region so that no nation ever rises to challenge it. They support India to check China, then support Pakistan (albeit with problems) to check India. They set up NATO to check the Russians and have replicated this strategy everywhere they have engaged other nations. When a nation that is not friendly is about to rise, the US simply creates an headache for it.

.

Well said. But the problem to me seems to be with the imminent change of guard at the house on the hill. Atleast Ubako had seen this coming and he positioned the country well to face Uncle Sam in the emerging challenges and opportunities in the region and beyond. Of concern is the soft spot that some of the leading hopefuls for statehouse have for US.

LRA was the choice entry point into Uganda....more like being handed on a silver platter.

Whatever reason they use to justify landing their boots, or holding sway favorable to themselves, such reasons will be those that appear to protect the citizens of that country from something even if that something must be created first.

There are no permanent friends and enemies in international relations. Even China and US need each other, with China holding massive amounts of American debt, and China needing a healthy America to buy products and source cheap manufacturing labour. We are small fry to these people, what worries the US is the systematic loyalty China is building in African countries. The era of real wars between countries is perhaps over; Trade and industry is the new battle field. If China marshalls enough puppet states, they can dictate policy on the world stage like the UN, WTO etc.
You see that business about assisting with Geothermal generation? That's a play at least to thaw rapidly cooling relations. Washington can't let Nairobi run completely East, the current approach being taken, where Presi's office is talking to the East and the PM's office is talking to the West is very sound. We are like a hot chic; smile We should take direct investment and technical assistance from everybody who offers it. Whoring all around. Like I said, no permanent friends or enemies.
