Help Needed From Doctors in Wazua, Diprofos

 I have a she-cousin of mine who has been having a skin condition on her hands and neck regions and some other personal places for quite a while, kindu 5 years to be precise. She has tried all the lotions and miti-ni-dawas with no success. Early this year in January 2012, a colleague of her advised her to get some few jabs of Diprofos which she did. Now 5 months down the line her face is completely distorted (for real, she looks like strangest), the hands are starting to swell too. To add salt to injury, she now have shortness in breath, weak joints, becoming diabetic etc. Her personal physician has told her he has no known antidote for the negative side effects and that all she can do is to wait and hope that all will be fine. The 28 year old is greatly depressed and occasionally misses job. Please help a sister Portfolio: Sold

Diprophos is a trade name for betamethasone. Usually given in 7mg/ml intramuscular injections. It is a glucocorticoid (corticosteroid). Is the skin condition psoriasis? Withdrawal of a systemic (injectable) steriod aggravates psoriasis. It is called the "rebound effect" of steroids. Steroids are very toxic. That is why they are included in cancer chemotherapy regimes. I often cringe when I see chemists in town dispensing prednisone/prednisolone for common colds and flus over the counter, just like Actals and Panadols. Totally irresponsible. Who's her dermatologist? She needs to arrange a visit. She also needs to have liver, kidney and various other blood tests. Set out to correct the world's wrongs and you will most certainly wind up adding to them.

That sounds like steroid withdrawal. I thought you should taper off injections (yaani reduce the dosages progressively) consult dermatologist. Could refer you to a friend Peace in our Homeland.

Then 5 months later PAP!,the face is swollen and all hands plus the the mild diabetic condition. Portfolio: Sold

Assuming you are in Nairobi, there is a very reliable dermatologist at Afya center I this his name is Dr. Monda or something. He might be able to help Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle

And I think this should come with a warning because most of us are culprits..... please do not take medicines prescribed by friends without consulting your doctor, unless such friend is your doctor. However desperate, do not experience with your body or a body of someone who cant make a decision for themselves, like your children.

yap, it's steroidal based and though antiinfalmmatory (partly why it was initially given) constant review is important especially for 'drug interactions'(any other meds used) and and it's own reactions/side effects...at times there benefit risk balancing but Time bound. Again constant review when on meds...not a one off administration n dispatch
