True. These are proceeds of gambling and therefore sin money. Why? Gambling is a game of chance. Against the odds, in gambling, the gambler seeks to predict an uncertain outcome and win the loser or losers' stakes.

Although gambling can be an intense game, any money awarded has been won, not earned or obtained as a return for work done or services rendered.

You use Karume as an example,great.
It's one thing to create wealth and another to maintain it.
Karume just like this client of yours was pushed by the hard past. But the estate is the way it is because some employed people help manage it.*I stand to be corrected

Karume was not uneducated... He completed his primary school education (in 5 yrs, instead of 8) then proceeded to Jean School (present Kenya Institute of Admin) for a certificate in business.. He understood accounting and the first job he was offered was that of a clerk..although circumstances forced him down a different path.. I don't know where this story of illiteracy came from.. read from the horses mouth (his autobiography)

Great to know that.

@all,
Thank you all. Seems there are four ideas that have been put forward regarding how she can use the money:

1) education: there are suggestions she does do a diploma. How much will the course cost? Also take into consideration that she will need to quit her job to study. Assuming it's a 1yr course, she will need rent, transport, food and maintenance etc for the period.

2) plot of land: where can she get land in Nairobi (or outskirts) at 400k?

3)business: what business?

4) stocks: which stocks?

From experience, the biggest mistake you can do in someone's life is decide for them. When I employ a gal, the first thing i ask her is what she wants to do with her life or after she earns some money. If she has no focus, then i know i am not with her for a long time..... usually, a gal without a goal will have no reason being diligent with her work. if you did this, then you must know what she wanted to do. You can explore that line of thought and see how you can help her. I'd mostly say, let her learn a skill than she can use for a long time. However, most of such education will not take up the whole of 450k... so you can still invest on land... the reason i'd choose land is because it will not affect either her work or her learning to monitor it. Once she's gotten some skills, then even if she decided to sell of her land she will be thinking differently.... But ultimately, dont make a decision for her... let her own the decision.... Hope its not too late to respond.

The housegirl quit her job 1 week after winning the cash and went to live with some 'relative' in the city. That was after endless calls from relatives and friends who told her she shouldn't work anymore 'after the Lord had blessed her so much'. Even her dad was asking for 200k from her so that he could start some business. She quit her job and said that she had her plans laid out on how to use the cash.
