I have been requested to put together a proposal for a server to handle about 15-20 pcs. I'm not an IT guy but i am hoping wazuans can share their expertise.
1. What kind of specs does a desktop PC require to function as a server machine? Please list the major ones.
2. Are there any other auxiliary stuff i need?
3. Softwares?
4. Approximately how much would all this cost?

To function as a server, a desktop PC would need a good processor and ample amounts of RAM.

Look for a computer with a quad-core processor and at least 8 GB of RAM. These are the most important.

On the software front, consider using Windows Multipoint Server 2011. I don't know what your needs are, but using multipoint server will save you a lot of money (you won't need to buy 20 PCs, for example).

Ensure you get good specs to avoid degrading the server and desktops performance

20 machines aren't many ,so a desktop PC with good specs, like core2duo or i3 processor ,at least 500GB HDD,4GB RAM etc would do

Definitely you need extra softwares apart from the normal ones like anti viruses and such, like an email server software e.g MSExchange,mDaemon, mail enable. Etc

You need windows server software like windows server 2008 to allow you set up active directory,DHCP,DNS and such if you plan to centrally manage the users

What do u mean by Auxillary stuff, For the server only or also the network?

Approximately 55K to 65K to acquire the server alone

For the software you can either buy proprietary or use open source products

Please tell us what Applications the Server will be running or other intended use so that we may be of assistance.

I want to find I have lived it's breadth as well.

forgot to mention hard disk space. Is the server going to be used as a file server (i.e. for centrally storing data)? Space would be important, and you'd have to look for a computer with what's called a RAID setup (RAID has to do with data redundancy in case one disk fails).

Thank you for the replies. :)

Deadpoet, yes the intention is to use it as a file server. For central storage, where everyone can back up and access files from one central location via a LAN .

Faa.I meant auxiliary machinery/accessories for the server and network too. We are hoping to do a wireless LAN for the 15-20 laptops. They should all be able to communicate with the server basically to retrieve and back up files. We will not be using it for emails.

Customer: It intended to be just for back up and storage. Actually i should say that we are hoping to have a DATABASE of all the info.

A core i3 machine with a mirrored 300 or greater GB disk is what I would go for as an affordable solution.

The locationally Archive the Data to an External USB Hard drive of which you can get a good for 1 TB at about 10k. This is ideal for offsite storage backup. Thing do happen ( Fire, burglary, sabotage and other things that go bump in the night)when least expected and you find that even you Server is inaccessible.

Can i get this machine off the shelf, or do i have to customize a kawaida desktop pc?

I saw this thread and got interested.

From your problem definition, you need to set up a domain so that storage can be centralized. And remember, you cannot access the files ones the laptop is not connected to your server unless the server has a public IP address.

For backup, purchase some cloud space from cloud computing services.

Guys here don't give you the correct cost.

Try the usual HP proliant servers
The Machine will cost you like 300k
Win 2008 server will cost like 120k
Antivirus Kerpsesky for 25 users 25k
UPS 2200Va about 60k
Installation configuration etc ----40k

forget the domain setup, just use google drive, or dropbox and you will save all the above cost.

I thought I had replied to this. The worst mistake you could make is to take the route suggested ati google drive without further information. What these pple do not clarify when they write one-liner server setup advise, is that every setup has pros and cons.

Did you finally make up your mind? If not, I can take a minute or two and describe one or two scenarios with pros and cons included.
