While the average man on the street may be excused for making such a blunder, professionals trained in the use of a certain language cannot. They are expected to maintain the highest standards in using that language.
This is the reason school children are encouraged to read newspapers in order to improve their language skills.... because a newspaper is expected to have the highest standard of language. But when journalists start using such words as "dateline" instead of "deadline" and "incidence" instead of "incidents", then they must be reprimanded for misleading the public.
