since when did allotment letters become proof of land ownership..allotment letters is an intention by the government to allocate land it is not a title, the only proof of ownership is certificate of title, or a grant. A share certificate is just a piece of paper saying you stand to be allocated the plot in case of winding up once the liabilities are settled.

To answer your querry effectively, one needs to understant in what context you are raising the question.

Otherwise to Banks and other institutions, such documents ordinarily would not pass as enough proof of ownership.

However if you hold a plot ownership certificate from a reputable firm pending processing of individual plot Titles - from a consolidated Title in their possession and Name, then you are good to go.

A plot ownreship Certificate is what most middle level real estate agencies confer before they eventually hand you your Title or deed plan to process the Title.

Unfortunately, many unscrupulous and 'connish' agencies have sprung up - issuing Plot ownership certificates/Share certificates over non existent or fraudelently "acquired" land. This is what informs most Kenyans apprehension towards such documents.

The alternative to this is to buy already demarcated and registered land - with its own Title which tends to be substantially dearer!

BTimer......thanks for that...I am concerned that the current generation of land buyers seem to be so rigid when it comes to using share certs and allotment letters during purchase of land whereas our parents and those before them were relying on these documents to purchase and sell land and processing the titles much much later and it didnt seem such a big issue, maybe due to the corrupt nature of present day real estate and property industry....I think we are moving to a time whence only title deeds will be the accepted evidence of property ownership....FYI I have family land in relatively upcoming prime area but with these docs and not title..any interested buyers loose interest on hearing that the land has no title but the other docs are available....thanks anyway...any divergent views..
