I was at Uchumu Capital Centre yesterday and I noticed that some one is fixing calculators on the trolley handle bars. Very useful in these hard times....especially when you wat to find out which is a better deal between a 400g tin going for sh285 and a 432g tin going for sh315....

The calculators have a covered screen where companies can place small 5cm x 5cm adverts.

Brilliant idea!!!!

2Mukiha,

.....And you can monitor your bill as you shop.........Is it Uchumi who are installing them or some smart advertising company?.............Very innovative i must say

Which raises the question,which one is Uchumi's flagship store? I would have thought Sarit Centre and that is where they would have piloted this?

@Njung'e:

not quite that easy. The calculators don't have memory. Thus if you buy 7 packets of milk @ 26 bob and two loaves of bread @ 33 bob you have to do the following:

punch in 26 x 7 and get the answer (182)
write answer 1 on a piece of paper
punch 33 x 2 and get 66
now add the answer for the milk (182) to this figure to get final result...248

Now that sound easy since there only two products.....but if you doing your end-of-month shopping,the calculator will be of little use.

I don't think Uchumi is doing it themselves,they must have been approached by some enterprising fellow..who will charge companies for placing ads and pay Uchumi for putting the calculators on the trolleys.

@General,

If the calculators are without memory as Mukiha puts it,then they aren't useful for end month shopping.......You are better off with a blackboard and chalk...-:)

@mukiha,

To go round the memory problem this is what you need to do:

26+26+26+26+26+26+26+33+33=248
